Regardless of how ben Simmons feels psychologically, the 76ers are trying to force him back on the court. After the team resumed a fine against him last week, Simmons met the team's therapist for the first time on Monday. Previously, he was reluctant to discuss his mental health with any team doctors.
Simmons' agent, Rich Paul, said the team's behavior worsened the mental health of his clients.
"I really believe that fines, targeted and negative publicity shine on this issue — it's very unnecessary and further exacerbates Ben's mental health problems," Paul said. "Either you help Ben or come out and say he's lying. Which one? ”
A top member of the 76ers declared that the team "absolutely did not" try to force Simmons to play, nor did he claim that he was lying. The team's position is that Simmons should attend all 76ers events unless the team's therapist or Simmons' personal expert reports that he cannot attend a game or practice.
The 76ers sent Simmons a timeline Thursday that included tonight's game against the Raptors, who lost 115-109. Simmons did not play. The team has fined him every time this has happened before, so another fine may be coming.
Simmons has made it clear to the 76ers that he wants to get back on the court when he's ready. Simmons trained individually, underwent physical therapy, and participated in shooting training and team meetings.
Paul said Simmons is willing to play for the 76ers again, but he is not mentally ready to return to the court.
