After the opening of the western front, Rommel was ordered to lead the B Army to resolutely resist the Allied attack. From June to August 1944, the Battle of Caen, commanded by Rommel, had a good effect, slowing down the Allied offensive. At a crucial moment, however, Rommel was relieved of his duties and poisoned shortly afterwards. Rommel was succeeded by the German defensive master Modell.
The German Seventh and Ninth Armies assembled on the fares front, building strong barriers against the Allies. But in the view of scholars, it was Rommel who could save the German army at this time, not Modell. Under the huge air superiority of the Allies, blind defense was doomed to failure. Rommel's offensive strategy was able to give the Germans a glimmer of life. Although Modell was good at defense, if the offensive power was handed over to the Allies, no one could hold his position in the indiscriminate bombardment of bombers.
After Modell took office, he was keenly aware that the US Third Army was too aggressive and had entered the Brittany Peninsula, and on both sides of it were the German Seventh Army and the Fifth Panzer Army, showing a state of encirclement, so Modell planned to attack the two flanks of the German Third Army. But in reality, this was precisely the Bait of the Allies. Use an army group as bait to attract the main German army to a decisive battle near the Brittany Peninsula. Modell gradually sensed something was wrong, but Adolf did not notice. Adolf stubbornly ordered Modell to surround the U.S. Third Army and eat the Allies. Modell had to do so.
The entire Army Group B was almost fully mobilized, and the British troops were quietly circling behind. At this critical moment, Modell issued a strange order to put the German 9th Panzer Division, which had just arrived at the front line, in charge of the rear of the palace, and the main German army retreated. This symbolic attack soon left Adolf in a cold sweat, and this was where Modell's shrewdness lay, and he neither offended Adolf's majesty nor made the latter realize his mistake.
The German 9th Panzer Division was the elite of the battlefield, resting in France after the Battle of Kursk, and when the Allies landed in Normandy, this force just recovered. However, in the battle to cover the large army, this force was still defeated by the Allies who could not finish fighting. The Allied 21st Army Group, which was delayed by the German 9th Panzer Division for 15 days, was a success in itself. In the end, the 300,000 main German troops successfully retreated.
