The Martyrs Monument to Chen Ding and Chen Mei is located in Xiaodong Village, Genghe Town, Gaoming District

Chen Ding, male, a native of Xiaodong Village, Gaoming Genghe Town, was born in 1887, participated in the provincial and Hong Kong strike in 1925, participated in the Guangzhou Uprising two years later, and returned to his hometown to work as a farmer after the failure of the uprising. Chen Ding joined the Communist Party of China in December 1938. In the autumn of 1942, under the leadership of the Party, the people of Xiaodong united with tenants in the Pingtang area of Genglou Town to carry out the struggle against rent and anti-tenants, and Chen Ding was one of the organizers and leaders of this struggle. In May 1945, Chen Ding was arrested by the Kuomintang army while contacting the separated comrades in Heshui Wanwu Village, and was killed in early June.

Chen Mei, female, a native of Xiaodong Village, Gaoming Genghe Town, was born in 1922. In the summer of 1938, the Gaoming County Working Committee of the CPC opened people's night schools in all villages in the county, organized the masses to learn cultural and military knowledge, and extensively carried out anti-Japanese propaganda activities. By chance, Chen Mei and the young people in the village participated in the study together. Reading at night for a long time, accompanied by books, opens a window for Chen Mei to recognize the world. In the same year, she joined the Guangdong Youth Anti-Japanese Vanguard and actively participated in anti-Japanese propaganda activities.

In November 1944, the 3rd Brigade of the Gaoming People's Anti-Japanese Guerrilla Brigade was established, and Chen Mei served as a cook. At that time, the troops arrived in the area of Ping Shan and Xiaodong, which bordered Gaoming County and Heshan County, and Chen Mei traveled five or six kilometers a day to buy melon vegetables and transfer grain to Genglou. In order to avoid the inspection of enemy sentries, she disguised herself as a rural woman and used her clever skills to ensure the logistical supply of the troops.

In May 1945, Chen Mei, who had become ill from overwork, returned to her hometown for medical treatment. In early June, the Kuomintang reactionary security brigade surrounded and suppressed Xiaodong. Chen Mei, who was hiding in a house of tattered grass ashes, was arrested for informing reactionaries in the village. The enemy interrogated and tortured Chen Mei many times, but Chen Mei would rather die than yield. Sister Chen's firmness annoyed the enemy. On June 7, Chen Mei was taken to Genglou Wei for execution at the age of 23.

Liang Chengjin, a folk researcher of Xiaodong Party history, said: "In 1973, in order to commemorate the glorious history written by the people of Xiaodong with their blood and lives and to highlight the revolutionary spirit, the people of Xiaodong built the Revolutionary Martyrs Memorial Hall through self-financing, fund-raising and government appropriations from many parties. "The monument to the martyrs Chen Ding and Chen Mei is several meters high and stands in front of the center of the Revolutionary Martyrs' Memorial Hall. It was built earlier than the memorial hall, was built by the Xiaodong Brigade of Heshui Commune, Gaohe County, and was relocated to its current site in August 1971.
