According to the Russian Athletics Association, Ivanov, 25, was found to have used stimulants by "bio-passport" technology, and his blood data showed signs of the use of banned drugs. Ivanov will be suspended for three years, starting on May 2, 2017, when he was initially temporarily suspended. In addition, all achievements won by Ivanov between June 2012 and August 2014 will be considered invalid and the medals won will be withdrawn.

At the 2013 World Championships in Athletics in Moscow, Ivanov won the gold medal in the men's 20 km race walk. Chen Ding, who won the silver medal at the time, was expected to make up for the gold medal. Chen Ding has faded out of the field in 2017, and if the replacement is successful, this medal will become the only world championship gold medal of his career.
