In 1986, Ma Jing stayed on as a teacher after graduating from graduate school. In 1988, he went to CERN as a visiting scholar to do research work. Since 1991, Ma Jing and his wife Tan Liying have devoted themselves to the research of satellite optical communications. Satellite laser communication has the advantages of large communication capacity, long transmission distance and good confidentiality, which is an irreplaceable means of building a space information highway and a cutting-edge science and technology in the field of international information.

Over the past 26 years, Ma Jing has adhered to the specifications of HIT, inherited the efforts of HIT, had the courage to bear the burden, moved from basic research to engineering research, successfully completed space tests, realized rapid capture, stable tracking and high-quality communication of star-to-ground laser links, and laid an engineering and technical foundation for the establishment of a space laser high-speed real-time information network in China. The "satellite-to-ground laser link communication test" successfully conducted by Ma Jing's team is an important milestone in the history of the development of China's satellite communication technology, marking that China is at the forefront of the world in the cutting-edge field of space high-speed information transmission. In 2013, the technology was selected as one of the "Top Ten Scientific and Technological Progress of Chinese Colleges and Universities" and won the first prize of the National Technological Invention Award in 2014. In 2016, Ma Jing won the "Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Science and Technology Progress Award". In 2017, the team's high-orbit satellite-ground two-way high-speed laser communication system technology was selected as one of the "Top Ten Scientific and Technological Progress of Chinese Colleges and Universities".
