The historical Zhong Hui, whose strategy is comparable to Zhang Liang's, was originally a hero of the Sima family, and was killed for rebelling against Sima Zhao

Text/Comrade Guevara

In "The League of Military Masters" and "Tiger Xiaolong Yin", Sima Yi's proud protégé Zhong Hui is portrayed as a talented and resourceful wizard, much like Yang Xiu in that year, which is not much different from historical facts. The only problem is that Zhong Hui's age is completely inconsistent with historical facts, and many of the experiences related to him in the TV series are all fictional. So, what kind of wizard is the real bell in history? What was his final outcome?

The historical Zhong Hui, whose strategy is comparable to Zhang Liang's, was originally a hero of the Sima family, and was killed for rebelling against Sima Zhao

Zhong Hui has been brilliant and quick-witted since childhood

Zhong Hui was the younger son of the Wei Dynasty's eunuch Zhong Yu and the younger brother of Qingzhou's Assassin Shi Zhongyu, who had been brilliant and quick-witted since childhood. On this point, the most popular passage in later generations stems from an anecdote in "The New Language of the World". Once, when the Zhong Hui brothers entered the palace with their father to meet Emperor Wen Cao Pi, Zhong Yu was sweating because of nervousness, but Zhong Hui was no one around. Cao Pi asked Zhong Yu why he was sweating, and Zhong Yu stuttered and replied, "The subject is trembling and trembling, and the sweat is like rain." Cao Pi curiously asked Zhong Hui why he did not sweat, and Zhong Hui replied in an imitating the tone of his brother: "The subject is trembling, and the khan does not dare to come out." Cao Pi laughed after hearing this.

"Zhong Yu and Zhong Hui have little reputation, and in the thirteenth year, Emperor Wen of Wei heard of it, and said that his father Zhong Xuan said: "The second son can be ordered." So I saw it. There was sweat on the face of yu, and the emperor said: 'Why is qingmian sweat?' Yu said, "The battle is trembling, and the sweat is like pulp." The question was asked: 'Why doesn't the secretary of state sweat?' "Trembling, sweat does not dare to come out." See The World Speaks a New Language

However, in history, Zhong Hui, as the son of Zhong Xuan in his later years, was only one year old when Cao Pi died, so this anecdote is all fabricated by later novelists and is not worth refuting at all. As for the "Army-Master Alliance" or "Tiger Howling Dragon Yin", the time of Zhong Hui's early birth is even more outrageous, and even when Cao Cao was alive, he was already a young man of nearly twenty years old, so it was even more ridiculous and generous to make such a mistake.

After the change of GaoPingling, Zhong Hui began to serve the Sima family

Zhong Hui's official debut was five years later in the first five years of the Reign of Emperor Cao Fang of Wei (245), when he was only 20 years old, he began to serve as a secretary Lang, and then in the next four years he was successively promoted to Shangshu Lang and Zhongshu Shilang. Zhong Hui was erudite and talented, especially proficient in metaphysics, and was deeply appreciated by Sima Shi when he was young, and at this time he probably had close contacts with the Sima family. Therefore, after Sima Yi launched the Gaopingling Rebellion, Zhong Hui officially began to serve the Sima family, and as an important staff member, participated in a series of power grabs after the Sima family.

During Sima Shi's eastern expedition against Huainan Qiujian and Wen Qin, Zhong Hui accompanied him and was in charge of confidential matters. On the way to victory, Sima Shi died suddenly in Xuchang due to an old wound. In order to seize sima jia's military power, the Wei emperor Cao Xian ordered Sima Zhao to garrison Tun Xuchang on the grounds that the southeast had just been pacified. At this time, Zhong Hui conspired with Shangshu Fu Gao, and on the one hand, he asked Fu Gao to return to his life, but on the other hand, he and Sima Zhao marched rapidly and garrisoned the troops south of Luoshui, intending to threaten the imperial court. Seeing that the general trend was gone, Cao Xian had no choice but to use Sima Zhao to rule as a great general, in the second year of the Reign of Zheng Yuan (255).

Zhong Hui assisted Sima Zhao and repeatedly performed qigong for the Sima family's usurpation of power

After Sima Zhao came to power, he successively eradicated dissidents and threatened the Wei chamber day by day, and Zhong Hui played a key role in this, and because of his merits, he was continuously promoted, successively serving as the Yellow Gate Attendant, the General Of the General's Office, the Lieutenant Colonel, the General of Zhenxi, the Governor of Guanzhong, and the Marquis of Eastern Wuting. As Sima Zhao's henchman, Zhong Hui made a great contribution to quelling the rebellion of Zhuge Zhi in Huainan. During his tenure as a lieutenant colonel, Zhong Hui interfered in the affairs of the imperial court and the appointment and dismissal of officials, and all those who were unfavorable to the Sima family would be eliminated with all their might, and the killing of the daimyo Ji Kang and others was out of Zhong Hui's plot, and he was also hated by Shi Lin.

Zhong Hui is talented, resourceful, likes to play with power, and is regarded by the people of the time as a "sage" Zhang Liang's wizard, and often becomes self-satisfied, much like Yang Xiu in the past. Zhong Yu was well aware of his brother's character, and once privately told Sima Zhao: "Zhong Hui is very intelligent, but he likes to play with power, and I am worried that he has a disobedient heart, so I ask the general to be wary." After hearing this, Sima Zhao replied with a smile: "If in the future Zhong Hui is really guilty of this, I promise to cure only the sins of the Zhong Hui family, and will not involve the Zhong family." Sure enough, not long after, Zhong Yu said a word.

Zhong Hui is talented and complacent, much like Yang Xiu

In the autumn of the fourth year of Jing yuan (263), Sima Zhao, with Zhong Hui as his commander, led Deng Ai, Zhuge Xu, and others to attack Shu Han. As a result, when Zhong Huibing was trapped in the Sword Pavilion and was useless, preparing to withdraw his troops, Deng Ai led his troops to smuggle across Yinping and raided Chengdu, and even killed Shu in one fell swoop. At the end of that year, Zhong Hui, as the commander-in-chief, was promoted to Situ for the merits of Shu and was given the title of Marquis of Wanhu County. However, after Zhong Hui destroyed Shu, at the instigation of the general Jiang Wei, he grew a disobedient heart and plotted to divide Sichuan and claim the title of king.

In order to realize his ambitions, Zhong Hui conspired with Jiang Wei, first slandering and killing Deng Ai, the number one hero of Shu, and then coercing the generals to follow her to attack Sima Zhao under the pretext of Empress Guo's will. Most of the generals were northerners, and because their families were all detained in Luoyang, they refused to obey their orders, so Zhong Hui imprisoned them and prepared to execute them all, but he was afraid that there was no one to unify the army, so he hesitated. Just at the moment of the first attack, the general Hu Lie's son wen changed, led the troops to clamor for various military sergeants to revolt, killed Zhong Hui and Jiang Wei, and took the opportunity to roughly Chengdu. Zhong Hui died in the first month of the fifth year of Jing yuan (264), at the age of forty.

Jiang Wei instigated Zhong Hui to defect and was eventually killed with him

When Zhong Hui was killed, his adopted son Zhong Yong (Zhong Yu's son) was also killed, and another adopted son, Zhong Yi, and his nephews Zhong Jun and Zhong Yuan (all three of whom were also Zhong Yu's sons) were also imprisoned, and all should be sentenced to death for their crimes. However, Sima Zhao remembered the merits of Zhong Yu and Zhong Yu, and remembered Zhong Yu's exhortations in those years, so he only executed Zhong Yi and Zhong Yong's sons, but pardoned Zhong Jun and Zhong Yuan and restored their official titles.
