Jiang Zilong (painter Guo Hongsong)
Text/Li Fang
Jiang Zilong is old.
I don't remember when Jiang Zilong began to like to call himself "old decay".
"Old and decaying, thank you for your love!"
"Thank you for your kindness, the old decay is willing to try."
Every time he made an appointment with him, he would reply politely. But the word, like a sharp knife, pierces people's hearts. In my mind, Jiang Zilong is like a poplar in the desert, proud and upright, stubborn and tenacious, never old. However, with the passage of time, Jiang Zilong, who was in the limelight at that time, actually had a connection with the word "old", which could not but make people feel sad.
A few years ago, Jiang Zilong lived in Tianjin, and rarely participated in the activities of the literary circles, and sometimes he drove to Beijing because of the meetings of the presidium of the China Writers Association. After that, he stepped down as vice chairman of the China Writers Association, and it was even more rare for him to come to Beijing for official business. He missed his old friends in Beijing, so he flew books and talked with friends on paper and pencil. He jokingly said: "It is difficult to enter Beijing, it is difficult to enter Beijing, and the 'Beijing Entry Permit' is too difficult to handle!" ”
Over the years, Jiang Zilong has been living in Zhuhai. In this beautiful modern city, Jiang Zilong is like a fish in the water, and his pen is tireless, and he seems to have returned to the golden age of life. In various literary activities, from time to time I saw his figure and heard his hearty laughter. In late January 2020, at the invitation of Chen Shixu, Jiang Zilong flew from Zhuhai to Guangzhou to participate in literary collection. Due to the delay in official duties, I flew over from Beijing, arrived a day late, and joined everyone. At the end of the year, Guangzhou in the cold winter is still windy and sunny, and the warm wind is habitual. At that time, no one thought that the year of Gengzi, which was still a few days away, would be wrapped up in such a huge disaster, and many relatives and friends would be separated from each other.
This time, Jiang Zilong walked a little slowly. In an accident two years ago, he injured his knee and doctors suggested that either surgery should be done or treated conservatively. Both options have pros and cons, surgery may be risky, and conservative treatment is too slow to recover. Jiang Zilong chose a difficult and long conservative treatment, and when it came to massage, he said that he would "squeak and scream in pain", but fortunately the treatment had some effects. "Hahaha, maybe forever crippled!" As a result, Jiang Zilong still talked and laughed freely. A friend gave him a wooden cane to help him balance, but the cane was in his hand, like a prop. Jiang Zilong used this prop to point out the country and the mountains, stirring up the words, which was quite a bit of a flamboyant, bookish, and exuberant taste. This time the schedule of collecting style is very tight, an activity, a visit takes two or three hours, even so, Jiang Zilong still stands straight, walking tigers and tigers, even if he relies on the cane to borrow power, he must also make a relaxed expression. I can see how much effort he needs to take with each step and what kind of pain he needs to overcome in order not to affect others. At a historical and cultural museum in Guangzhou, the staff moved a chair for him alone and invited him to sit down and listen to the introduction. He immediately smiled and politely refused: "How can you make a privilege!" We laughed with him - this is Jiang Zilong, not branches, no vines, no immortality.
The ancients said that a gentleman is frank. I thought I was talking about Jiang Zilong. Underneath his pure, sincere, spontaneous, cold exterior is a fiery heart, and in his sharp stroke stands the majesty of a big husband.
Forty years ago, he came out with reform literature. A "Chronicle of The Appointment of Director Qiao" made the reformer "Director Qiao" sensationalize the whole of China, and also deeply branded the three words "Jiang Zilong" in the history of contemporary literature. Huo Daodao, Qiao Guangpu... The image of many reformers in Jiang Zilong's pen truly, three-dimensionally and diversifiedly records the historical orientation and social direction of China's reform and opening up. His pen and ink are calm, the praise contains a sense of distress, and the spirit of criticism is not lost in the praise. Forty years later, we find that he is not only a recorder and witness of reform, but also a participant, practitioner and promoter of reform.
However, as the founder of "reform literature" and as a representative writer of industrial literature, Jiang Zilong never forgot the land where he was born and raised, and never forgot his peasant status. He often said that he was a farmer in his bones, which was his root.
Jiang Zilong was born in Cangzhou. Cangzhou, named after the Bohai Sea. Cangzhou is adjacent to the sea, so the name Cangzhou means "the state of the sea". Before the age of 14, Jiang Zilong grew up in rural Cangzhou. There are tall mud houses, driveways that are a lot shorter than the land on both sides, big puddles outside the village, and days when fish are bathed in puddles... These scenes, deeply rooted in memory, were written into his articles. He sighed: "Cangzhou, like a dream, always follow me." "Jiang Zilong is proud of his peasant nature, proud of Cangzhou's hometown of dreams, Cangzhou gave him the true color of a farmer, but also gave him a straightforward disposition, so that he always has a strong will and a deep heart for the world."
"Peasant Empire", which began to be created in 2000 and took eleven years to complete, is Jiang Zilong's journey to find his roots. In this epic and magnificent book, Jiang Zilong wrote about his profound reflections on the changes in rural life and the cultural character of peasants, as well as his strong nostalgia for the countryside and the land that lingered for a lifetime. In order to write this "Peasant Empire", Jiang Zilong went to the countryside many times to live and experience, the countryside of Guangdong, the countryside of Henan, the countryside of Shandong, and the countryside around Tianjin, all of which left Jiang Zilong's footprints, and he deliberately let himself become a farmer again and write in a natural atmosphere of the countryside. In these lands, which are either poor and barren, or rich and fertile, he eats and drinks, but he lingers and is as willing as a glutton.
Jiang Zilong's prose is whimsical and widely studied. He said, "No matter what you write, whether it is industrial themes, rural themes, urban themes, no matter how you write, whether you write romantically, realistically, or magically, the only thing that can comfort the reader is the truth, even if it is a fictional story, there must be a real world in it." That's his approach to the article. Jiang Zilong based his literary concept on the solid foundation of "reality": the real world, the real difficulties, the real characters, the real feelings... "Maybe the truth is not always likable, but people can't escape it, they can only face it and listen to its guidance." Jiang Zilong said, "I believe that the heart of any reader can open to the truth." ”
Someone once recorded Jiang Zilong's funny story. Once, at a Sino-American writers' party in Los Angeles, the American Beat poet Ginsburg asked the Chinese writer Jiang Zilong to guess the riddle and said that the riddle had not been cracked in 20 years. Jiang Zilong claimed that he had not encountered an unguessable riddle since he was 3 years old. Ginsburg's riddle is: "Put a 2500-gram chicken into a bottle that can only hold 500 grams of water, and take it out in some way." Jiang Zilong immediately replied, "What tool you use to put it in, what tool I use to take it out." Everyone was confused, and Jin and Jiang would laugh. Ginsburg held out his thumb and said, "You were the first to guess this riddle." It was the 1980s, american writers didn't know much about linguistics, Chinese writers knew very little, and the tool Jiang Zilong used was precisely "language."
Mu Duo Jinzhong, Huai Cai holding instruments such as Jiang Zilong, can be described as rare; wise and clever, vertical and horizontal agitation like Jiang Zilong, really rare in the world. And consistently, for decades as a day, drumming and shouting for the people, Jiang Zilong can be called a social conscience.
This is indeed a blessing for Chinese literature.
