Beijing Biotuper | Crown fish dog

Hi, my name is Crown Fish Dog

Chinese name is pronounced guàn yú gǒu

The Latin name megaceryle lugubris

I belong to the Buddhist monk order, kingfisher family, and I am a resident bird in Beijing.

Although I don't have any green all over my body, I am also a "kingfisher", and I am the largest kingfisher in the country.

Morphological characteristics

I am about 40–43 cm long, with well-developed crown feathers, a thick and straight mouth, and a white stripe at the base of my lower beak. The upperparts are bluish-black with white transverse spots and spots. The underparts are white with gray longitudinal streaks on the sides of the neck that extend down to the sides of the thorax. There are gray longitudinal stripes above the thorax that form a chest band, in which the male has a rusty color on the chest and white underwing coverts, while the female has no rust color, but the underwing coverts are rust-colored.

Habits of life

I am a loner who prefers to inhabit clearer rivers and streams, often resting on rocks or power lines near the water. I prefer to make my home in streams, crevices in rock walls, river valleys, earthen caves, etc. Fish and frogs are my staple food. Listening to the name, you know that fishing is my housekeeping skill, and the wide wings make me fly straight and steady, once I find the target, I immediately plunge into the water, and the straight mouth will lock the target to death.

Where is my presence in Beijing

In this survey of biodiversity in Beijing organized by the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Ecology and Environment, I was found in Haidian, Fangshan and Miyun Districts. My presence means that the fish are nearby, and I hope that everyone will work together to protect the wetland and protect the water environment, so that it will be easier for everyone to see me!
