This strangely feathered spotted fish dog was first photographed in the Little Black Mountain Conservation Area in Longling County, Yunnan Province, and belongs to the county's new wildlife record. This is also the ninth new wildlife record (including 8 new bird records) found in Longling County since 2021. So far, longling county has known 299 species of wild birds. At the same time, the species of wild vertebrates in the Little Black Mountain Reserve in Longling County have increased from 468 in 2006 to 543 now. Spotted fish dogs mainly inhabit the shores of open water such as streams, rivers and lakes in low mountains and plains, and their diet is mainly small fish, and they also eat crustaceans and a variety of aquatic insects and their larvae. Spotted fish dogs are mainly distributed in the south of the Yangtze River and Yunnan, Guangxi and other regions in China. It has been included in the Red List of Vertebrates of China. According to reports, although the name of "dog" is a fishing expert, in the name of known birds in China with the word "dog" only two species of spotted fish dog and crown fish dog. Spotted fish dogs have superb fishing skills, is a veritable fishing expert, in the folk also called spotted fish dogs as "spotted fishing lang". In addition, although the spotted fish dog is often active on the shore of the water, it does not nest in trees and grass, and usually the adult bird will use the slender beak to dig a hole in the steep soil wall on the shore of the water to make a nest, and the nest depth can reach about 1 meter.
