Take a walk on earth

Ji String

Walking on earth,

Alone,

I raised my black cane,

And put it heavy on the spot

On the firm and cold crust,

Let the people who inhabit there

You can hear a faint noise,

Thus perceives my presence.

The poet Ji Xian (1913-2013) was one of the leading generals in Taiwan's modern poetry movement. In the early 1950s, he founded the quarterly magazine "Modern Poetry" and organized the Modern Poetry Society, which had a major impact on the development of new poetry on the other side; he put forward the famous "Six Creeds" of modernism, of which "new poetry is a horizontal transplant, not a vertical inheritance", and openly advocated cutting off tradition and "total Westernization", so he was criticized. The poet moved to the United States in the 1970s and died in California in 2013 at the age of 100.

The poems written by Ji Xian himself are not as "extreme" as his poetic views. In his pen, there is no shortage of fresh and free works, showing the poet's rich experience and distinct personality. This poem "Walking on the Earth" portrays the image of the poet "walking alone with a staff", showing an extraordinary "spatial autonomy consciousness" with the most ordinary daily behavior, and trying to publicize "my existence", which is a small poem with a good combination of content and form.

The whole poem has only eight sentences. The first sentence is straight to the point, the poet walks on the earth, seemingly ordinary, but in fact, the words are amazing: the foot of the walker is "earth"! The reader seems to see a blue planet suspended in the universe, high above the poet who is walking "alone". Look, he "raised my black cane and/and placed it heavily on/on the firm, cold crust"—what a three-point lonely, seven-point "conceited" mr. loner, what would he want to do? It turned out that he tapped on the "firm and cold crust" in order to: "Let the people who are perching there / can hear a faint sound, / and thus perceive my presence." "Good fellow, this walker, who is somewhat bored by loneliness, did not use the "crust" as a door to the neighbor's house to knock on the door of the neighbor's house, to make a call for friends and friends, but only to let the people there "hear a faint sound, / thus perceive my existence", it seems that his "true intention" is to affirm "my existence": he wants to express himself with a little movement, "a small sound", and it can also be said that he uses this poetic "wand" to issue a "heavy" message to the "solid and cold crust". Again, it is the "existential manifesto" of the lonely who "whispers".

"Existentialism" is a popular philosophical trend in the West after the war, which has a certain influence on Taiwan and even the contemporary Chinese literary circles. Ji Xian's poems are not "philosophical lecture notes", we only need to understand that in the poet's "creepy" and solitary state of mind, there is still a tenacious "desire to express", and although it is inevitable to exaggerate, it also has its positive significance, as a poet, as a life that "exists" on the earth, such singing is unique and interesting.
