For this exhibition, Wang Dongling's works are basically shown in his large characters and "chaotic books", that is to say, his creative works in recent years have been fixed into his writing style. First, as a calligraphy professor, he engaged in calligraphy innovation and did not let everyone see thousands of years of traditional works. Many people who study calligraphy believe that no matter how innovative, traditional things must be adhered to, and Wang Dongling, as a professor of calligraphy, has the responsibility and obligation to teach traditional calligraphy to students, and his so-called innovation is just incompatible with traditional calligraphy, very different, and will not be accepted by people.
Second, Wang Dongling's so-called "chaotic calligraphy" itself violates tradition, and is working against the ancients and against traditional calligraphy. Wang Dongling once said that we should learn from the ancients, but the way created by the ancients has no longer our work at all, and only by working against the ancients may we have a way out. So he turned the lines and columns of the ancients into a dense, chaotic "chaotic book", making traditional calligraphy unrecognizable, and it is precisely because of this that many calligraphy enthusiasts believe that it is better not to write randomly, and to write traditional calligraphy honestly.
Third, about Wang Dongling's chaotic writing, it also incorporates some ideas of Western art, as Chen Zhenlian, vice chairman of the China Book Association, said, his calligraphy art is a fusion of ancient and modern and Chinese and Western art ideas, so that which calligraphy lover can understand his calligraphy art? Fourth, on the issue of "starting from scratch". This is very worth pondering. Some people understand it as "starting from scratch", although it is only a word difference, but its meaning is completely different. "Starting from scratch" means that it will be before, but people start over, and they don't need to start from the foundation of pointillist painting, like Wang Dongling's starting from scratch, perhaps he is adhering to the existing innovation, "starting from scratch", making his previous foundation more solid, adding unlimited power to "random books". And "starting from scratch" is another concept, it is to let Wang Dongling abandon all what he has learned in the past 60 years, learn from scratch, start from dot painting, knotting, and using pens, lay this foundation, and truly move towards the traditional road.
