In my mind, "Siamese Love" has always been at the top of the list of same-sex movies/TV series, and even "Call Me By Your Name" starring Sweet Tea in the previous two years cannot match it. It also makes me feel that Thailand has its own approach to shooting same-sex love, which is delicate and nuanced, and unique in Asian works of the same type. In fact, there are many works depicting same-sex love in Thailand, and almost every year there are film and television dramas with this theme.
However, the recent hit Thai drama "Interpret My Love with Your Heart" has once again subverted my view of such works in Thailand. If you say that from the first two episodes of this drama, it does not match its high score of more than 9.0 Douban. Then from the second half of the third episode to the fourth episode, it can be said that it has surpassed "Siamese Love" and promoted to the first place in my heart of the genre. The "Thirty-Year-Old Magician" in the same popular broadcast in Japan next door is a small sweet drama with no depth and malleability compared to it. In fact, "Interpret My Love with Your Heart" has risen from the initial Douban score of 9.1 to 9.5 without falling, which has explained everything.
The story of "Interpret My Love with Your Heart" is set on the thai island of Phuket. Phuket has a large number of Chinese immigrants, so the popularity of Chinese here is very high. One of the protagonists, De, is a Fujian immigrant, a family who runs a Hokkien noodle restaurant on Phuket and has a high level of Chinese. When De was a child, he was fascinated by a Chinese movie "Legend of the Sword Moon" and admired the chivalrous character Yongjian in it, so he planted a dream of acting in his heart, hoping to become an actor and play Yongjian. However, this dream was ridiculed by other friends, and only ou'er at the same table supported him.
However, a conflict shattered their friendship. The reason is simple, it was in elementary school. The teacher organized the students of the class to perform the Chinese drama "Legend of the Sword Moon" on the stage in the New Year, but assigned the role Yongjian, whom De had always longed for, to Ou'er. Despite his disappointment, De helped Ou'er to Chinese and practice acting, which ultimately made Ou'er's performance a great success. After the performance, Ou'er excitedly told De that he had fallen in love with acting through this performance, and hoped to fight for his dream as an actor in the future. Unexpectedly, De was very angry, and he thought that Ou'er had deliberately concealed it and taken the role he had dreamed of. Two good friends had a big fight and never had contact with each other again.
It should be admitted that the first part, listening to a bit awkward Chinese theme song and Yongjian strange hood, will make Chinese audiences feel a little bit like they will play, but gradually adapting to learning Chinese is a thread through the whole process, and they will also start to like the theme song of "Legend of the Sword Moon".
The real beginning of the story is after the two grow up. In order to be admitted to the Media University to study acting, De and Ou'er met in a Chinese cram school when they grew up. De regards Ou'er as his biggest enemy and competitor, and has always hoped that he will succeed in being pre-recorded by the ideal university in the cram school, and curses Ou'er to fail. As a result, when he was really admitted early and Ou'er was not selected, De found that he did not have any happy thoughts, but instead looked at the crying Ou'er and cried uncomfortably. The two approached each other again, returning to their childhood intimacy. De decided to help Ou'er to study Chinese and help him take the unified college entrance examination, and the two agreed to study acting at the same university together.
Presumably thailand became the first Asian country to legalize same-sex marriages as it passed a bill in 2020 that allows same-sex couples to register their marriages. The play does not focus on the struggle of same-sex love against external pressures, but focuses on the perception of the two protagonists' inner emotions. As many viewers who watched the show commented, two boys who were seventeen or eighteen years old in adolescence were at a crossroads of confusion, fear and confusion about their love and future, no different from other young people of this age.
After they reconcile, they learn while playing and playing, helping each other pursue the people they like, but in the process they gradually fall in love with each other. Ou'er was the first to recognize his own heart. Although he was weaker in appearance, he was more determined in his heart. Ou'er already knew that he liked boys, and originally had a good feeling for Bai Shi in the cram school, but after discovering the changes in his heart, he threw himself into his feelings for De very simply and took the initiative to pursue what he loved. Even knowing that De likes Dan, Ou'er never wants to give up, always spending some careful thoughts and trying to occupy more of the tuition time that De gave himself. However, after De initially rejected his feelings, he was able to immediately ask De to stay away from him.
But despite this, Ou'er, who seems to be extremely mature in his feelings, is also a young child after all. After the two kissed in the seawater, Ore confirmed that De had the same feelings for him as himself. But De pushed Ou'er away again, saying only that he had done something wrong and hoped to return to his friendship. Ore is caught up in her own self-identity disorder, if she is a girl, the relationship will be smoother? He put on his mother's corset in the mirror at home, but finally took it off in tears and threw it aside.
On the contrary, De, when he first appeared on the scene, had a very tough personality, and confessed to the girl Dan who had a crush, but he was afraid and hesitant to admit the changes in his feelings for Ou'er. Therefore, De's performance is quite scumbag, and he receives a lot of scolding from God's point of view. He could not bear that Ou'er was far away from himself and close to others, but he did not dare to admit that this was a desire beyond friendship, so his expression was childish and awkward, jealous, tantrum, and possessive. However, when Ore asks him to look directly into his heart, Defies back and returns to Dan in the safe area, accompanies Dan and kisses Dan in order to gain peace of mind.
The shackles of traditional morality and family view trapped Virtue and confused him. In my opinion, De is actually more painful, he is completely deranged. Why do you have a desire for good friends? He even tried his erection on Yongjian's portrait in the middle of the night in order to confirm his orientation. Ou'er said that De did not know what he really wanted, De did not know, he used his own way to express his like, even to the expectations of the whole family, but still did not dare to say the most important sentence.
If you don't see this as a feeling between the same sex, such a confused feeling, who did not experience it when he was a teenager. Whether it is friendship or love, we often can't tell. I always think that friendship may be longer, but I push the people close to me to the position of close friends, and I dare not admit my likes.
When Ou'er and De finally kissed, the bullet screen brushed up, "Not kissing, you can establish a romantic relationship", "If you can be a lover, there will not be so many single dogs." When we are young, we are always very cautious, repeatedly tempted in our feelings, suffering from gains and losses, hesitating, often unable to recognize our true hearts, dilemmas, and finally missed out with many people who were originally in love.
Dan is probably one of the few female characters who will attract attention in a same-sex love drama. She is not a flat symbolic supporting actress. At the beginning, she established her own independent female character characteristics, and she did not dislike The pursuit of De Dan, but she hoped to be admitted to college first, and then consider falling in love. After discovering that he liked Shangde, Dan did not twist and kissed directly, without being a passive character waiting for a kiss. Later, after she felt that De's attention was not on her, she used coloring as a temptation, and after being confirmed, she pointed out the transformation of De directly.
So later her outburst seemed quite tense, and when De gave up the pre-record place for Ou'er, Dan yelled at him, "You sacrificed so much for him, and it was your mother, not me, who you need to apologize." She was angry, and although De betrayed her family's expectations for Ou'er, she still did not understand her heart.
I've always felt that summer is the best season for falling in love. The weather in Phuket prepares sufficient conditions for the prelude of love. The white beach under the setting sun, the wet flower shirt, and the exposed breasts of teenagers are all romantic footnotes that attract attention to this play. The director's delicate depiction of the complex feelings of teenagers, coupled with film-level composition and color grading, make this drama particularly prominent in the same type of film and television works.
It is worth mentioning that the motivation for the filming of this drama is very interesting. The two male protagonists originally served as a side line CP in a Thai drama called "Love Siren". As a result, because their performance was too eye-catching and the ending was very tragic, they were strongly requested by the audience to reshoot. Unexpectedly, the director simply used the two as the protagonists and rearranged a story.
The official English title of "Interpret My Love with Your Heart" is "I told sunset about you", which I prefer to the Chinese translation: a deeply hidden, secret and beautiful relationship, probably only the sunset by the sea can share with it. Hopefully, next week's finale will be a good outcome.
