Wei Tianchi

Wei Tianchi's name is almost born with calligraphy, and people like him who converted their hobbies into their own professions as soon as they graduated from college (in the 1960s, Wei Tianchi graduated from the department of Chinese of Nanjing Normal University, and then stayed on to teach calligraphy and engaged in calligraphy teaching), needless to say, in the 1960s, when calligraphy was regarded as "outside of learning", that is, now when "calligraphy" was established in the great initiative, it should also be regarded as a "lucky person".

This "luck" did not seem to have been interrupted during the ten years of turmoil, so much so that Mr. Wei Tianchi published a monograph "Basic Knowledge of Calligraphy" in the 1960s, which was a very rare and good book at that time, and Wei Tianchi's style of calligraphy was formed during this period.

In the 1980s, Wei Tianchi opened a calligraphy major at Nanjing Normal University and was promoted to professor in 1985. This was the first professor of calligraphy in China. Although he taught calligraphy in colleges and universities, Wei Tianchi's influence is not limited to the education industry, he has also been the chairman of the Jiangsu Provincial Book Association for many years, and he has also served as vice chairman and consultant of the China Book Association.

Wei Tianchi's calligraphy has a distinct personal face, very recognizable, with the inscription method of writing grass, using the pen gesture to sink vigorously, the knot body ups and downs indulgence, forming a majestic calligraphy characteristics. In the impression of ordinary people, Wei Tianchi's calligraphy is "domineering", "arbitrary", and "incomprehensible". In fact, however, there is a source for this way of writing.

Mr. Wei Tianchi is the kind of person who is easily agitated, so he is good at cursive writing that is most suitable for expressing passion. It is said that when he wrote, others "can only look at it from a distance, not play with it", because Mr. Wei is full of passion, ink flowers splash, and if he is too close, he is afraid of ending up with "black near ink". Although this is a joke, it can also be known that one of its creative states is a spot.

Mr. Wei Tianchi once learned calligraphy from Mr. Shen Zishan and Mr. Lin Sanzhi, and when the author saw a couplet of Mr. Wei in the 1970s, there was a great sense of scattered old wind, but it also implied a sense of "isolation" from Mr. Lin Sanzhi and a sense of "submission" to this implicit style, and what really resonated with Mr. Wei was the romantic calligraphy masters of the Ming Dynasty such as Chen Xianzhang and Xu Wei.

The romantic style of calligraphy that began in the middle of the Ming Dynasty set off a frenzy of Chinese calligraphy, and they pursued individuality, pursued the grandeur of the momentum, and pursued the expression of strong feelings, thus creating a shocking romantic masterpiece. Mr. Wei Tianchi can be said to be the inheritor of this style of writing.

Xu Wei's wantonness and Chen Xianzhang's opening are traceable in Mr. Wei Tianchi's cursive writings, and especially Chen's influence on him is the greatest. Chen Xianzhang is known as the "Maolong Pen" (thatched pen). As the heir of Lu Jiuyuan's "heart study", Chen Xianzhang has the heroic spirit of "heaven and earth I stand, ten thousand transformations I come out, and the universe is in me", based on this, his next pen is full of confidence, clumsy and cunning, rigid and soft, thin and hard, coupled with his special writing instrument Mao Long pen, which makes his book form a style characteristic of hair but not light, dry and complex, thick and light.

Mr. Wei Tianchi seems to have inherited these excellent traditions, and added his own things, such as the use of the twisting edge, so that the overly flying gestures have a buffer space. More importantly, Mr. Wei Tianchi' style of writing in line with his own nature reveals the soul of an undisguised and truly visible artist.

Of course, many of Mr. Wei Tianchi's books are not satisfactory. For example, the contrast between the thickness of the lines in the line letters is too strong; the excessive flow rate of the cursive writing makes many people accuse it of frivolity. Mr. Bai Sha tasted the clouds: "Yu Shu seeks silence in every movement, put it but does not let go, stays without staying, so I am wonderful to move also", Mr. Wei seems to be a little less diligent in "quiet", I don't know if this is appropriate?
