Why did Confucius accept the summons of Nanzi, the Duchess of Weiling, attract so much gossip?

author:Read history by day

Around the second half of 496 BC, Confucius was finally formally received by Ji Yuan, the Duke of Weiling, and was given an official position. It is not known exactly how Confucius obtained this official position. However, two events that preceded him made his career in defending the country controversial.

The first thing that should have happened shortly after Confucius returned to Weiguo, a Weiguo doctor named Mi Zifeng told Zilu that if Confucius wanted to, he could help Confucius get a high position comparable to Weiqing. Yako and Zilu are conjoined, and at the same time they are quite favored by Wei Linggong Jiyuan. Mikoto dared to make such a promise, in addition to his intimate relationship with Zilu and Weiling Gongjiyuan, it should be more out of respect for Confucius, he wanted to help Confucius, and he was sincere.

But when Zilu relayed Mizi's flawed words to Confucius, Confucius did not appreciate it, and he insisted on obtaining official positions in his own way—to enter with courtesy and retreat to righteousness, and never to seek any impolite shortcuts. This means that he will refuse the help of Yako or anyone else, and completely beg for the wisdom of Wei Linggong Ji Yuan.

Confucius told Zilu that if he did not get the opportunity to become a scholar in Weiguo because of this, it would be his destiny.

The second thing, that is, "the son sees the south son".

Nanzi was the wife of Ji Yuan, the Duke of Weiling, and she summoned Confucius, perhaps admiring Confucius's reputation. At first, Confucius did not want to see Nanzi, but Lady Weijun summoned him not to meet him, so he had to see him as a last resort.

In fact, Confucius did not want to see Nanzi, and the most important reason was that Nanzi had a bad reputation.

Nanzi was from the Song Kingdom and was favored by The Duke jiyuan of Weiling, but she did not observe the way of women and secretly communicated with the Prince of Song, which was almost an open secret in the Song Kingdom. Wei Linggong Ji Yuan was in the dark, regarded Nanzi as a heart and liver, in order to please Nanzi, and even agreed to Nanzi's request, inviting Gongzi Chao from the Song Kingdom to meet Nanzi, as for how the two met and what they did after meeting, Ji Yuan did not seem to know anything.

Ji Yuan didn't know it, but his son, The Prince of Weiguo, had heard about it. In the autumn of 496 BC, when He was passing through the Song Dynasty, a farmer deliberately sang at him:

Established Erlou pig, Lu Gui Wu Ai Feng?

Lou pig refers to sow, and Ai Feng refers to boar. This song is very mean and spicy - now that you have satisfied your sows, hurry up and return our beautiful breeding pigs!

After returning to China, he secretly ordered his courtiers to play Yang Suo: Follow me to see Nanzi, and when the time comes, as soon as I make a look, you will kill her! Xi Yang quickly agreed, but when it was time to move, he became a traitor--Kuo Yun gave him three consecutive glances, and he did not move forward. Nanzi sensed that the atmosphere was not right, and fled in a hurry, crying and crying to complain to Wei Linggong Jiyuan: Ku Yun wants to kill me! Ji Yuan was furious and chased after his henchmen, who had already fled to the Song Kingdom in a hurry.

When Kuo Was running, Confucius may still be on his way back to the Wei capital Emperor Qiu. And when Nanzi summoned him, he must have known about this change in Weiguo, and he must have heard something about Nanzi's personality.

The weiguo harem is a place of fragrance. Nanzi dressed up, sitting behind the tent, Confucius audited the head, Nanzi answered the prayer, there was the sound of ring admiration, and it suddenly entered the ear. As for what the two men said, it is difficult to know for sure.

Although Confucius and Nanzi replied with courtesy, this meeting still aroused many doubts.

After Confucius returned, Zilu looked unhappy, as if the teacher had done something very humiliating. Zilu's attitude greatly angered Confucius, and he reprimanded Zilu and swore: If I do anything indecent, let God abandon me!

Zilu was a disciple, and Confucius could speak without scruples, but he could not be so straightforward with outsiders. Wang Sunjia, the Grand Master of the Wei Dynasty, suspected that Confucius wanted to use Nanzi to seek shi, so he deliberately ran to ask Confucius: What does it mean that people say, "Instead of flattering Ao, Ning Mei and Stove"?

The so-called "Ao" refers to the deepest part of the room, the place to sleep; the so-called "stove" refers to the place where cooking is cooked, in the bright place. "Rather than flattering the Ao, ning mei and the stove" was the idiom of the time, which meant that instead of pleasing the God of The Olympia, it was better to please the God of Vesta. Wang Sun Jia could not have been unaware of his intentions, and the reason why he asked knowingly was actually to imply that Confucius: If you want to seek an official position in weiguo, instead of turning to Nanzi in the harem, it is better to let wang Sun Jia come to help, be upright, and more effective.

Confucius knew that Wang Sunjia was not a villain, and he persuaded in such a roundabout way, but also to take care of his own face, so he calmly replied: This sentence is not right, if you offend the heavens and make a mistake, it is useless to pray to anyone.

Confucius also said in his words: I have not done anything wrong, and I do not have to worry about the punishment of heaven.

Although Confucius frankly responded to the doubts of all sides, he was indeed received by Ji Yuan, the Duke of Weiling, shortly after meeting Nanzi, and was entrusted with the official position of 60,000 yuan (roughly equivalent to 2,000 stones of the Han Dynasty, according to Mr. Qian Mu). Perhaps Nanzi did say good things for Confucius in front of Ji Yuan, but this was obviously not Confucius's intention.

Ji Yuan had no intention of reusing Confucius, so Confucius was not too happy, but with Feng Lu, he could feel a little at ease, lecturing with a group of disciples, waiting for the opportunity to display his talents.

Half a year later, in the summer of 495 BC, The Duke of Luding died, and his son Ji Jiang took the throne as the Duke of Lu' Lai.

The world is still in turmoil, and the north and south are in chaos. In 494 BC, the southern State of Wu defeated the Yue state of Yufu Jiao, and the Chu people sent troops to besiege Cai; the war in the north revolved around Chaoge, with Zhao Martin of Jin leading his division to attack Shi Ji and Xun Yin, and the State of Qi leading a coalition army to cut down Jin to save them...

At this time, Wei Guo was on the side of the State of Qi, and Ji Yuan, the Duke of WeiLing, worked tirelessly and sent troops several times to qi and Jin. One day in 493 B.C., Ji Yuan suddenly remembered that there was another confucius who was internationally famous in China, so he asked Confucius to call him and ask him what he thought of the military battle front, and Confucius replied: I only know about the matter of trick beans, and I have no research on war.

The matter of tricking beans, that is, the so-called ritual sacrifice and so on.

Confucius's words seem humble, but in fact he firmly expressed his own views: I came to defend the country, and my purpose was only to rule by ritual and music, and I did not want to participate in violent wars.

Ji Yuan may not be able to say no, because he did not have hope for Confucius. But Confucius obviously understood from Ji Yuan's questioning and attitude that when he came to Weiguo with his ideals, it was Mingzhu who secretly surrendered.

A glimmer of illusion that had been held before, gradually faded away in the long wait, and finally vanished in this seemingly insignificant conversation. There was no point in staying any longer, and Confucius decided to leave.

The next day, Confucius left Wei and walked very resolutely.

A few days later, Duke Ji yuan of Weiling died, and Ji Yuan, the son of crown prince Kuo, took the throne as Duke Wei.
