Filming began in Marrakech on 4 May 1998 and lasted 17 weeks before moving on to erfoud, a small town on the edge of the Sahara Desert, and then to the UK, where filming was completed on 29 August 1998. During this period, the political situation in Egypt was turbulent, so the crew could not go there. To prevent dehydration under the scorching Sahara sun, the crew's medical team made a drink that all staff members drank every two hours. Sandstorms that occur every day inconvenience the filming work, and snakes, spiders and scorpions are also a major problem for everyone, many of whom have to be airlifted to the hospital for treatment after being bitten. The film's filming process was officially supported by the Moroccan military, but the insurance company refused to provide the actors with kidnapping accident insurance at the time.
