Liu Yan, who is behind the aura of national, provincial and ministerial honors such as famous teachers and outstanding teachers, graduated from Beijing Forestry University with a doctoral degree, is currently the director and professor of the Flower Teaching and Research Department of the College of Landscape Architecture of Beijing Forestry University, and is also a member of the Horticulture Sub-Committee of the Teaching Steering Committee of Plant Production In Colleges and Universities of the Ministry of Education, and the president of the China Flower Arrangement and Flower Art Association. Encountering the garden is a special attraction
Liu Yan's accidental encounter with the garden doomed her lifelong fate with the garden.
In 1980, at the age of 17, Liu Yan was admitted to Beijing Forestry University, which was still a forestry college at the time, and studied in the department of landscape architecture. After graduating from the university in 1984, he taught in the Flower Teaching and Research Department, climbed on the three-foot podium, and began a teaching career of continuous exploration, during which he studied for a master's degree in garden plants and a doctorate in physiological ecology. Except for visiting scholar at Cornell University in the United States from 1997 to 1998, Liu Yan has hardly left the undergraduate podium.
Talking about her initial aspirations, Liu Yan said: "I actually want to study medicine. But the kindness of her heart and the abundance of emotions eventually led her to choose the romantic and affectionate profession of "garden". "I once saw a magazine by chance, and I was impressed by the woodcut of Feng Er, it was the Suzhou Garden, and I had an impression of the garden in this way." Liu Yan said.
For Liu Yan, the garden profession was not well known at that time, but with the deepening of professional research, she devoted herself to gardening for more than 30 years. She constantly pursues, in the classroom, in the field, in the laboratory, with flowers as a companion, with students as a companion, to taste the garden and feel the garden, so that people can live a better life. As a teacher, Liu Yan used her real life experience to tell future garden students: to understand their profession, they may have to exhaust their lives and learn for life, but reading, communicating with others, and thinking about themselves can get more gains.
During her undergraduate studies, Liu Yan met many good teachers, which also inspired her to strive to become a "good gentleman". The lofty patriotic feelings, noble moral character, profound knowledge and skills, and the style of teachers and friends of the teachers of the College of Landscape Architecture made Liu Yan understand the attitude towards gardens and teaching during her college years, and she was determined to be a scholar in a down-to-earth manner and sincerely teach and educate people.
From 35 years of teaching, Liu Yan has truly achieved the same as the older generation of gentlemen, adhering to persistence, taking root in the frontline, and immersing herself in teaching. She has taught 7 courses and 3,200 hours of garden floriculture, floral application design, ornamental botany, etc., involving more than 6,000 students in 5 majors such as gardening, landscape architecture and ornamental horticulture. Among them, "Garden Floriculture" was rated as a national-level fine course and a national-level high-quality resource sharing course, "China Famous Flowers" was rated as a national-level high-quality video open class; 5 textbooks were edited and 5 were edited, of which "Garden Floral Studies" was rated as a national-level high-quality textbook, completed 17 education reform projects, and wrote 12 teaching reform treatises (ministries); formed a unique teaching method, won 1 second prize of national teaching achievements, 4 provincial and ministerial teaching achievement awards, 11 municipal teaching achievements, and 7 school-level teaching achievement awards.
For Liu Yan, a day into the garden is finally a garden person. For colleagues and teaching team members, Liu Yan pinned her hopes: "I want to learn something other than knowledge from the teachers who teach you." The students of our garden are particularly able to endure hardships
As a student of the Garden Academy and as a teacher of the Garden Academy, Liu Yan has witnessed the continuous development of Beilin through several years of spring, autumn, winter and summer, from the number of enrollments to the number of teachers to the hardware facilities of the entire campus. But she believes that there is still a need for spiritual inheritance, that is, "the students of the Garden Academy are very able to endure hardships." In the case of heavy schooling, whether they used to be wrapped in cotton coats and huddled in wooden rooms, or now in comfortable classrooms, students have not slackened off at all. Liu Yan also places great emphasis on practice, and her students should not only care about techniques, but also pursue the "Tao". She said: "To study the garden, you have to read, you have to run out to see, and you have to travel thousands of miles." ”
She understands the hardships of students, so Liu Yan has always been rational and strict in her treatment of students. And this kind of rational rigor is the "spring breeze sneaking into the night" type of persistence. Liu Yan believes that education is to overcome deficiencies, is to get out of the comfort zone, as a teacher to let students grow should let students see their own shortcomings, but also to help students set a higher standard, know what is better, students can make progress. Liu Yan firmly believes in rational understanding and happy education, as a teacher, to help students discover interest, guide students to establish interest, on the basis of interest strict requirements, maybe there is a little happiness, rather than allowing students to blindly follow.
She understands the hardships of students, so Liu Yan has always been fraternal and generous to students. He is also a teacher and a friend, which is another true portrayal of Liu Yan's teaching. Starting from her own experience, she cares about the all-round development of students, teaches flower knowledge and innovates the curriculum to think about politics, guides students to sharpen their will with "plum blossom fragrance from bitter cold", and strengthens moral education with "lotus flowers out of the mud without staining"; respects students' individual differences, sets goals in layers in teaching, teaches accurately, stimulates the creative ability of outstanding students, encourages ordinary students to make solid progress, and does not leave a student behind. As the director of the teaching and research department, he took the initiative to undertake the graduation thesis guidance work of students with psychological problems and academic difficulties, treated with sincerity, followed the good examples, helped dozens of backward students to rebuild their confidence, successfully completed their studies, and some also obtained excellent graduation thesis. Liu Yan always firmly believes that on the basis of trust, it is necessary to guide and influence students' lives, believe in students, hope that students will succeed, and let students believe that they can do it, which is the power of love in the activities of educating people.
Be a guide to stand tall at the head of the tide
"If you have lived in the garden at Forestry University, you should have a deep affection for plants." Liu Yan firmly believes that to learn plants well, we must start to learn and learn repeatedly from the beginning of enrollment, and we cannot forget the knowledge we have learned because of the passage of time. The wind, water, soil and environment of the whole city are maintained by the surrounding plants.
She not only loves plants, but also studies them seriously. When doing postgraduate research topics, Mr. Wang Lianying was her supervisor, and she took Liu Yan to Shandong to practice. Liu Yan noticed that the farmer planted a large number of peonies in the field, and after twenty days of opening, he thanked him, so could he find a way to develop it into cut flowers? This will expand its use and allow farmers to have more income. At that time, she made flowers with very simple feelings - the earliest time under the guidance of her mentor to do peony dry storage preservation research, starting from the screening of varieties, found that some excellent varieties can be stored for three months, more than a hundred days later can be taken out and inserted. This made Liu Yan feel that peony medicine was very remarkable, and she also understood the importance of flower research. Since then, Liu Yan has begun to explore technology research and development, write scientific research on the land of the motherland, and has presided over the National Science and Technology Support Program, the National Natural Science Foundation, the "948" project of the State Forestry Administration, 20 science and technology projects in Beijing, 5 horizontal projects, 7 provincial and ministerial projects; 12 national invention patents, 2 utility model patents, 3 industry standards, and more than 200 papers; as the second person to complete the third prize of national scientific and technological progress, 1 third prize of national scientific and technological progress. It has made its own contribution to promoting the progress of China's flower industry; relying on the national scientific and technological research projects, it has conquered a number of key technologies in the screening of facilities and varieties of important flowers such as peony and spring dendrobium, low-energy production, flowering period regulation, and environmental precision control, etc., and made outstanding contributions to the research and development of modern production and cultivation technology of flowers in China; after 12 years of research and integration, the industrialization production mode of peony medicine has been integrated, and the industrialization production technology system of different products of peony pot flowers, cut flowers and container seedlings has been established and popularized and applied. To provide an example for the transformation of the advantages of traditional famous flower resources in China to the advantages of products, as the first person to complete the third prize of the Beijing Science and Technology Progress Award; to open the precedent of ultra-low temperature preservation of garden plants in China, relying on 3 national natural science foundations, the establishment of more than 70 kinds of garden plant planting ultra-low temperature preservation procedures, the establishment of the world's only garden plant pollen ultra-low temperature library, to fill the relevant research gaps in China, has important social significance for resources and biodiversity conservation.
Her affection for plants not only satisfies landscape appreciation, but also guides graduate students to explore plant applications from a scientific and cultural perspective with a scientific and rigorous attitude. For example, in the face of today's admiration for the concept of "flower land", Teacher Liu Yan expressed her views in simple and clear words: we need to explore various application methods, but not too much, to know the essence of its application, can not become a kind of hype. A healthy industry should explore problems very rationally and scientifically, rather than staying on the concept of publicity. The design of the flower landscape can represent the characteristics of the region, and it should be advocated to explore regional resources and reflect its ecological value, rather than pursuing the appearance of the flower landscape, which is far from enough to understand the flower landscape. She and her doctoral students edited the book "Flower Landscape Design", which studied the history of the development of flower landscapes abroad, studied the growth and development process of flowers in Beijing, and proposed applicable types. She is also the president of the China Flower Arrangement and Floral Art Association, and is committed to promoting the inheritance of China's excellent traditional culture and the development of China's flower arrangement and floriculture.

Liu Yan is a teacher trained by Beilin herself, where she studied, grew up, stayed in school to teach, and then never left this fertile land.
