According to the website of the Chinese Embassy in the ROK, on August 6, Ambassador Xing Haiming met with Ban Ki-moon, former secretary general of the United Nations and chairman of the Boao Forum for Asia, to exchange views on Sino-ROK relations and the Beijing Winter Olympics. Xing Haiming said that at present, China-ROK relations are developing well, and the two sides have worked together in the same boat during the epidemic to help each other and promote exchanges and cooperation in various fields to go against the trend. This year marks the beginning of the "Year of Cultural Exchanges between China and the ROK" designated by the two heads of state, and the two sides are about to usher in the 29th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. Standing at a new historical starting point, we hope that the two sides will continue to deepen mutual trust and cooperation in accordance with the consensus reached by the two heads of state and push bilateral relations to a new level. In particular, it is hoped that the two sides will take the opportunity of hosting the Beijing Winter Olympics and the Gangwon-do Winter Youth Olympics respectively to further enhance people-to-people exchanges and deepen people-to-people friendship.
Ban Ki-moon said that the great achievements made by China and the ROK in the past 29 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations have not only benefited the two peoples, but also made important contributions to regional peace and development. As chairman of the Boao Forum for Asia, he will continue to devote himself to Sino-ROK friendship and make positive efforts to promote exchanges and cooperation among regional countries for mutual benefit and win-win results. As the Chairman of the Ethics Committee of the International Olympic Committee, I HOPE that the Olympic athletes of South Korea and China will play in style and achieve good results. The Chinese side will hold the Beijing Winter Olympic Games in February next year, and sincerely hopes and believes that with the active efforts of the Chinese side, the Beijing Winter Olympic Games will be successfully and smoothly held, becoming a sports event of peace, friendship and unity.
