Zhu Guangya's open letter

Source: Today Science and Technology Association

On October 16, 1964, in the no-man's land of Lop Nur, after an earth-shattering noise, the world was shaken, and the earth seemed to drill out a wild beast, and in front of him, a huge mushroom cloud bloomed in half the sky, and it did not fall for a long time, condensing like a torch.

A pair of eyes, in the distance, gazed at this cloud, at this torch, and there seemed to be a flame burning in their eyes.

And the tears were slowly sliding down the crow's feet at the corners of his eyes.

He was not very old, but the corners of his eyes were old, but today, a happy smile appeared at the corner of his mouth, and he smiled again as he had when he was younger.

He remembered those years of twenty years ago.

In that era of green years, his goal and direction have never changed, and he has a core in his heart.

Zhu Guangya's open letter

Zhu Guangya, 21 years old, looked at the huge mushroom cloud in the newspaper, like a shield that covered the sky and the sun, blocking the sky high in the sky, lingering in his mind for a long time.

When, our country, too, can have such a super weapon, then we will no longer be bullied and oppressed.

On August 6, 1945, the Second World War was carried out to the final critical moment, the death of Japan, still stubbornly resisting, helpless, the United States with a uranium bomb called "Little Boy", thrown into Hiroshima, Japan, the terrible destructive force instantly turned Hiroshima into ruins, destroyed the buildings and human beings there, and hovered in mid-air for a long time in the red-gray mushroom cloud, like a devil's face. On August 9, an even more powerful plutonium bomb called "Fat Man" fell into Nagasaki again, and in an instant, the whole city was destroyed, the building collapsed, and everything was destroyed.

These two atomic bombs changed the war, changed the world, and changed people's thinking.

It also changed Zhu Guangya and changed the fate of his life.

He will never forget the shock they brought to himself, if China has such weapons, will the great powers dare to step on our weapons, trample on our land, and enslave our people?

It was also in the autumn of that year that he was given that once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Zhu Guangya, born on December 25, 1924, was originally born in Yichang, Hubei Province, when he was a child, because his father worked in a French company, he often had to run around, he followed his father to Hankou, and then came to Chongqing, and he received a Western education under the influence of his father, and he had a strong interest in physics, science and technology. When he grew up, he was first admitted to the Physics Department of National Central University, and later, when he learned that Southwest United University was recruiting transfer students in Chongqing, he went to take the exam and successfully entered Southwest United University, and his teachers included Zhou Peiyuan, Ye Qisun, Wu Dayu and other famous professors and scholars.

The one who had the greatest influence on him was Mr. Wu Dayu, a famous physicist and educator who is known as the father of Chinese physics.

On this day, Teacher Wu Dayu hurriedly called him to the office, along with his classmate Li Zhengdao.

Mr. Wu said solemnly to them that he hoped that the two of them would be his assistants and follow him to the United States to study.

Zhu Guangya and Li Zhengdao were a little confused and a little excited.

But Mr. Wu Lao was obviously more excited than they were, saying that this was the meaning of Yu Dawei, the current deputy head of the Military and Political Department of the Nationalist Government and also the internationally renowned ballisticist, who sought out Hua Luogeng, Zeng Zhao, and Wu Dayu, hoping that they could take their assistants to the United States to learn physics and advanced technology.

"The U.S. military says it can let Chinese learn from them about how to build atomic bombs." Mr. Wu said finally.

Zhu Guangya and Li Zhengdao were surprised and delighted that if we also possessed such weapons like the United States, how could we be invaded by Japan, and the country would be shattered into mountains and rivers, and if there was no strong country, there would be a safe home.

Zhu Guangya naturally agreed happily, packed his bags, and followed Teacher Wu Dayu to set foot on American soil.

When they and a group of Chinese scientists thought they could really learn from the United States about the experience of the nuclear bomb, they were informed that the various american scientific research institutions related to the atomic bomb would never allow foreigners to enter.

They are indeed too naïve, that is the unique technology of the United States, the power to dominate the world, and how can they easily teach this technology to outsiders, which is absolutely a secret within a secret.

The young and vigorous Zhu Guangya felt extremely humiliated and painful, and the feeling of being deceived made him ashamed of his naivety, and he secretly swore that since he had come, he would assiduously study the knowledge of nuclear physics and advanced technology, and with his own ability and without relying on external forces, he would develop his own "atomic bomb." The struggle in his heart was like a powerful "atomic bomb" that broke out.

Therefore, when the inspection team was disbanded, he did not choose to return to China, but continued to stay in the United States with his teacher Wu Dayu. Wu Dayu taught and did research at his alma mater, the University of Michigan, where he continued to work as a teacher's assistant, studying theoretical physics, and pursuing a doctorate in graduate school to study experimental nuclear physics, laying the most solid foundation for the future development of the "atomic bomb". Even in his busy work, he did not dare to slack off in his studies, not only excellent results in various subjects, won scholarships for four consecutive years, and also published many papers such as "Conforming to measurement methods (i) β energy spectra" and "Conforming measurement methods (ii) internal transformations" in the world-famous physics journal "Physical Review", becoming the youngest rising star in the physics community.

Yes, he worked hard, like a sponge, absorbing as much knowledge and wisdom as possible and transforming it into his goal.

He was waiting for that day to come!

Zhu Guangya's open letter

On October 1, 1949, new China was founded!

The news spread all over the world, although Zhu Guangya was abroad, but the heart to serve the motherland will never change, hearing this news, he and the people of the whole country, the excitement of the mood is incomparable, it is difficult to calm down for a long time.

By then, he had earned a Ph.D. in nuclear physics from the Department of Physics in graduate school, where he got a well-paid job teaching and researching.

However, every Chinese, after learning of the founding of New China, will always be tempted to return to the new motherland, to see what it is like to drive out the great powers and the new China that is in ruins and waiting to be rebuilt, and whether it can also contribute its own strength.

Therefore, he was determined to take advantage of this opportunity to return to the motherland, and he knew that there were many Chinese students like him, they may want to go back, may want to continue to stay in the United States, may waver, thinking of this, he is determined to write an open letter to these international students, calling on everyone, with their own learning skills, to return to the motherland, build our own homeland, not to waste the years of this life.

So he wrote an "Open Letter to Students Studying in the United States" and received the support of 52 international students who were preparing to return home in the near future, and they all signed their names, which was published in the eighth issue of the third volume of the "Newsletter for Students Studying in the United States" in New York, and was seen by more international students.

Zhu Guangya's open letter

At the end of 1949, it was published in the "Newsletter of Students Studying in the United States" and drafted by Zhu Guangya.

The letter reads:

"Students: It is time for us to return to China to participate in the construction of the motherland. The construction of the motherland urgently needs us! The people's government has called us loudly again and again, and Beijing Radio has also issued a call for students to return to China. The people's government is welcoming and entertaining overseas students who have returned to China. Students, the fathers and elders of the motherland have placed infinite hopes on us, what hesitation do we have? What else can be hesitated? What else are we wandering around here? Students, we all grew up in China, we have been educated for more than 20 years, we have never planted a grain of rice, we have not dug a piece of coal. We all grew up supported by the blood and sweat of thousands of Chinese workers and peasants who worked all day. Now that they are eager for us, shouldn't we hurry back and dedicate our skills to the people of the motherland? Yes, it's time for us to hurry back. ”

"From now on, forty-five million peasants, workers, intellectuals and entrepreneurs will unite under the great banner of anti-feudalism, anti-bureaucratic capital and anti-imperialism to work together to build a new China, a free and democratic China, a new China premised on the happiness of the workers and peasants, that is, the masses of the people. To accomplish this work, there are many hardships ahead, but we have full faith, we are moving towards the road full of bright future, and this responsibility for building a new China is for us to share. Students, the motherland is calling us, what are we hesitating about? What's the matter? We should go back right away. ”

"Listen, students! The motherland is calling to us, forty-five million fathers and brothers are calling to us, the glory of five thousand years is calling to us, and our people's government is calling to us! Go back! Let us go back and sprinkle our blood and sweat on the land of our motherland to irrigate the splendid flowers. We in China are going to come out, and our nation is no longer a nation that has been insulted! We've got up, go back, hurry up! The motherland is eagerly waiting for us! ”

This sentence, the words from the heart, such as the sub-rules crying blood, deafening ears, patriotic children, surging blood, many wavering students after seeing this letter, the same enthusiasm, made up their minds, returned to china to repay the effect.

At that time, a poor and white China was in need of this group of engineers, experts, and scholars with advanced technology, and this letter recruited back an unknown number of talents, so that our motherland, from the barren land, grew advanced flowers.

He finally returned to his motherland, back to Wuchang, with knowledge, technology, experimental equipment, and a passion for blood. Later, he went to teach at Peking University, passing on what he learned to more students and more Chinese.

Zhu Guangya's open letter

Zhu Guangya worked on the case

In 1955, the state began to set a strategic plan for the development of nuclear weapons and the breaking of nuclear monopolies, and China's nuclear weapons were rapidly developed from scratch.

In 1943, he participated in the theoretical design of the first atomic bomb, and in 1964, he detailed the work plan for the development and testing of the atomic bomb.

In October 1964, China's first atomic bomb exploded successfully in Lop Nur in Xinjiang, and he burst into tears as he watched the mushroom cloud rising from the atomic bomb.

Three years later, he led the team to successfully develop hydrogen bombs, and participated in the organization and leadership of the first air-dropped aerial bomb and the first missile and atomic bomb "two bomb combination" test mission. Since then, China has become one of the few countries in the world to independently master nuclear technology.

The world was shocked, and no one dared to underestimate us anymore.

This is another kind of protection and defense, and the great powers can no longer eat our fat flesh like the beasts of old times.

Later, he also participated in the organization and command of China's first underground nuclear test, and researched and developed China's first nuclear power plant, the Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant.

Zhu Guangya's open letter

In the autumn of 1993, Zhu Guangya was at the Lop Nur Experimental Base in Xinjiang

If Qian Xuesen is the "father of two bombs and one star" in China, he is the one who was called "The Man After Qian Xuesen" by the New York Times.

However, in his heart, he still understood that studying nuclear weapons was a helpless move, and when he saw his son, he wrote in the poem: "The atomic bomb like a mushroom is very cute." When he was very angry, he criticized his son: "The atomic bomb is a terrible weapon! "Absolutely not like that."

The weapons of war can never be overly glorified.

In the face of honor, he is still sober, and he only hopes that all mankind can remain sober.

In December 2004, the international number 10388 asteroid was officially named "Zhu Guangya Star".

Zhu Guangya looked at the starry sky and sighed faintly, saying that he did not dare to be.

And in his lifetime, he has done one thing - China's nuclear weapons.

At 10:30 on February 26, 2011, Zhu Guangya died of illness in Beijing at the age of 87.

The "ZhuguangYa Star" in the sky will always shine.
