In his youth, Tian Yu liked to read and was good at fencing. In the first year of Chuping (190), the Kwantung rebels arose, and Dong Zhuo moved Emperor Xian of Han to Chang'an. Liu Yu, the pastor of Youzhou, sighed and said, "The rebellion of the thieves, the exile of the imperial court, and the overthrow of the four seas, no one has a firm belief." In the second year of Chuping (191), Liu Yu immediately politely and thoughtfully invited Tian Yu to meet him, and was very satisfied with him, so he let him take charge and buy a carriage and horse for him.

When he was about to leave, Tian Yu said: "Now that the road is blocked and cut off, and thieves are rampant, if I claim that an official is ordered to go on an envoy, I will be named by everyone, and there will be many inconveniences." I would like to go in my personal capacity and hope to be able to arrive smoothly. Liu Yu listened to his advice.

Tian Yu then returned home, and he selected more than twenty brave young people from his family and who had come to be willing to be his followers, and rode together on horseback, and Liu Yu personally came out to worship the road god and send him off.

After getting on the road, Tian Yu went to Juyongguan, out of the border plug, along the Yin Mountain, directly to Shuofang County, along the path, and finally arrived in Chang'an, completed the mission. The imperial court appointed Tian Yu as a knight lieutenant.
