Beijing, July 10 (China Youth Daily, China Youth Daily reporter Ye Yuting) Today, Tsinghua University's first admission notice in 2021 was officially issued. Also sent with the notice was a book donated by Academician Qiu Yong, president of Tsinghua University, to the new students, "The Old Man and the Sea", and a letter to the new students, sending a message to the new students to "shape the spirit of tenacity and temper the quality of courage and perseverance".
The first new students to receive the acceptance letter are the guaranteed students who have entered the national training team through the five university olympiads of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and informatics to obtain admission to Tsinghua University. In 2020, the first place in the national finals of the five university science Olympiads unanimously chose Tsinghua, and more than half of the national team players chose Tsinghua.

This year is the seventh time that President Qiu Yong has donated books to new students, before which they were "Ordinary World", "Walden Lake", "The Story of Art", "From One to Infinity", "Ancient Rivers" and "Native China", and the books donated were widely loved by students.
The reason for choosing the book "The Old Man and the Sea", President Qiu Yong said in a letter to the new students: "The Old Man and the Sea" is a realist masterpiece by Nobel Prize winner Hemingway, and a classic in the history of human literature. In the book, the author tells the story of an elderly fisherman who wrestles with a big fish in the middle of the sea. This seemingly simple story shows man's indomitable endurance to transcend limits, man's fearless courage to fight tenaciously with unknowable nature, and makes the reader deeply feel a shocking power, a spirit of struggle that must do its best no matter what the result.
Qiu Yong said: "No one has no spirit and cannot stand. In the book, Hemingway borrows the old fisherman's mouth to utter his spiritual inscription, "Man is not born of failure" and "A man can be destroyed, but he cannot be defeated.". I hope that in the new stage of life, you will dare to face all difficulties and challenges, pay attention to shaping the spirit of tenacity, and constantly sharpen the quality of courage, which will become your lifelong wealth. ”

In this year's acceptance letter, an additional "small surprise" was added, that is, the commemorative cover for the 110th anniversary of Tsinghua University. Opening the commemorative envelope, a bookmark printed on the second door of Tsinghua University came into view. On the back of the bookmark, Tsinghua University gave another gift to the freshmen of the first-word class - a universal movie voucher for the documentary movie "University". With this voucher, all new undergraduate students in the class of 2021 can watch movies for free and experience the way of college.
