Good evening to all book lovers, welcome to the reading column "Encounter" produced by Fan Deng Reading.

Today, I will interpret Hemingway's masterpiece " The Old Man and the Sea " .

Hong Kong writer Ma Jiahui once commented:

"This book is like a gas station in your brain, when you have frustration, weakness, add fuel to yourself." 」

When you can't survive, I hope this great book will bring you spiritual strength.

I know that there is a hot question:

"Every day is very hard, what is the meaning of living?"

One of the high-ranking people replied:

"I suggest you go and see The Old Man and the Sea, which may not explicitly tell you what it means to be alive, but it does tell you what it's like to stay in difficult times."

Hemingway's "The Old Man and the Sea" tells the story of an old fisherman named Santiago who goes out to sea to fish.

After three days and three nights of hard work, all he brought back was a fish skeleton.

Writer Wang Xiaobo said: "'The Old Man and the Sea' is not only a story of an 'unlucky' fisherman, it also reveals the common destiny of mankind. ”

After reading this book repeatedly, I understood that the most advanced way of life is to accept the opposite of what I want.

"The Old Man and the Sea": The most advanced way of life is to accept that things are counterproductive

Contrary to wishes, it is the norm of life

Santiago is an old fisherman who lives in the Gulf of Mexico and has decades of fishing experience and skill.

Recently, he had bad luck, having not caught a fish for 84 days, and living off food alms from restaurant owners.

The village's elderly fishermen expressed deep sympathy for Santiago and avoided fish-related topics when chatting with him.

The young fisherman would mock his coated sails with flour bags, which were folded up like a flag marking eternal failure.

The difficulties of life, the pity ridicule of peers, Santiago did not care.

When the morning of the 85th day faded, he set sail again.

This time out to sea, finally a big fish was hooked.

Santiago pulled the sling with all his might, trying to pull the fish out of the sea.

But the fish was too big, and it swam away on its own, dragging the fishing boat into the depths of the ocean.

From noon to late afternoon, from late afternoon to early morning, and from early morning to late afternoon, Santiago refused to let go and remained deadlocked with the fish.

He had no helper, so he had to pull on the fishing rod alone.

The huge drag force caused his back to be extremely painful, and his left hand had a severe cramp.

He had no way to eat food, no way to sleep, and persevered with tenacious willpower until the sun rose on the third day.

The big fish finally got exhausted and slowed down.

Santiago took the opportunity to use all his strength to insert the spear into the fish, killing the big fish.

He was finally able to take a break, tied the fish to the side of the hull, turned the bow of the boat, and prepared to return.

Misfortune strikes again, and the smell of the big fish attracts a large group of sharks, who follow the fishing boats and wait for the opportunity to plunder the fruits of the old fisherman's labor.

Santiago had to lift his spirits again and fight the sharks desperately.

But in the end, the shark bit the big fish to only a skeleton, and the hard work of three days and three nights was in vain.

Luo Xiang once said: "Do what you think is right, and then accept it as the opposite of your wishes." ”

Fate always gives us a little sugar and a merciless slap in the face.

Born to be human, who is not hopeful and has to live in the cruelty of reality.

No matter how we make all the preparations and carefully arrange the plan, we can't withstand a fateful arrangement.

Life is full of twists and turns, and my life is up to me and also by heaven.

It is possible to change your life against the sky, but it is the norm of life to backfire.

All loss implies gain

The people of the fishing village call Santiago "unlucky eggs", he has been fruitless for 87 days, and now he has not caught fish for 84 days.

Only the little boy Manolin was hopeful about him, believing that he would be able to catch a big fish.

Manolin and Santiago are not related by blood, but the two are as close as grandchildren.

In the days when Santiago didn't catch a fish, Manolin still believed he was the best fisherman.

After a long period of unprovoked life and life in San Diego, Manolin would prepare food and beer for him and help him make a fire to keep him warm.

Early in the morning of the 85th day, Manolin came to Santiago's house early in the morning, brought him coffee and breakfast, and helped him carry his fishing tools to the boat.

The little boy said to Santiago:

"As long as I live, I won't let you go out to sea hungry to fish."

Manolin was a light in the old man's life, warming his lonely and cold heart.

Life didn't treat Santiago well, but it gave him some solace.

On the 85th day, Santiago finally caught the fish, but was dragged to the deep sea by the fish.

Refusing to give up, he engaged in a power struggle with the big fish, which lasted for two days and two nights.

He felt that he and the big fish were very different in strength, and hoped that there would be a helper around him.

He thought of Manolin for the first time, and sighed in his heart: "If only the child was here, he could help me." ”

When Santiago was exhausted and wanted to give up, Manolin's voice echoed in his ears: "You are the best, the fishing technique is superb." ”

Manolin became his psychological pillar, and even though he was alone at sea, he felt that he had the strength to rely on.

The big fish is attacked by sharks, and only a skeleton remains.

Santiago lamented his three-day effort, but seemed relieved.

At this point he knew that Manolin must be waiting for him to come home at the port, and he wanted to go back early so that the boy would not be worried.

On this trip to sea, Santiago found nothing, but it awakened his deepest emotions.

Some people understand when they are in adversity, some people worry about them when they are desperate, and someone waits when they return.

Manolin's friendship was far more precious than a big fish.

Writer Lin Qingxuan said in "All Regrets Are Complete":

"The sun may feel like it will hurt the autumn land, but the seeds in the land sprout green because of the sun."

As long as we don't lose our hearts, nothing can harm our true lives.

As the years pass, the horse does not stop, and life is a process of continuous loss and continuous gain.

Life is bumpy, ups and downs, something makes you cry, and someone will make you laugh.

Everything in the world has cause and effect. All that is lost will eventually be repaid.

"The Old Man and the Sea": The most advanced way of life is to accept that things are counterproductive

Let go of obsession and reconcile with fate

It was already deep at night, and the harbor was silent, with only a few lights in the seaside residential area.

Santiago finally returned with the boat.

With no one to help, he did everything he could to park the boat, pack up his fishing gear, and get back to shore.

The old fisherman was glad his boat was not damaged and could set sail again with a little repair.

And his body was already exhausted to the extreme. He had to sit down and rest five times before he reached his shack.

During his three days at sea, he fished hard and fought sharks with all his might.

He was obsessively hoping that he would come back with a big fish, sell it for a good price, live a prosperous life, and block the faces of those who mocked him.

However, he went out to sea hopefully and eventually returned home empty-handed.

I wanted to amaze the four, but I became a laughingstock again.

Santiago slept soundly, got up the next day, and couldn't wait to build a new spear.

He was ready to rest for a few days in a windy weather, so he set off again.

In the face of fate's trickery, Santiago did not have too much sadness, he was no longer stubborn, reconciled with fate, and accepted the truth calmly.

Many things in life, do your best, but also obey the destiny.

What you give doesn't necessarily pay off, and what you get is quickly lost.

"The Old Man and the Sea": The most advanced way of life is to accept that things are counterproductive

This trip to sea in Santiago is not the epitome of the lives of many ordinary people?

Some people work diligently and earnestly, working overtime day and night, hoping to complete a good project and get a bonus, but in the end they are dismissed by the company.

Some people give everything for their families, work hard and complain, but what they get is indifference and betrayal.

Someone has struggled all his life to finally achieve financial freedom, but he receives a critical illness notice.

The American writer Marianne Williamson said:

"Indulging in the past does not heal the wounds of the past, only living in the present can heal the pain of yesterday."

The people I meet are all practicing; the things I experience are all grinding.

If it backfires, believe that fate has other arrangements;

If you experience ups and downs, believe that there will be a rebirth after the disaster.

Neither complaining nor remorse can resolve the misfortunes we encounter, and only by letting go of attachment and forgiving the past can we find hope.

What can be changed will change, and what cannot be changed will be accepted calmly.

To be a person, it is rare to let go; life, the most important thing is to know how to reconcile.

"The Old Man and the Sea": The most advanced way of life is to accept that things are counterproductive

Write at the end

The Old Man and the Sea is a short story with a simple plot, but author Hemingway won the 1954 Nobel Prize in Literature for this story.

Translator Zhang Ailing gave the book great praise, saying:

"I love The Old Man and the Sea, and it's one of the most beloved foreign books I've ever seen."

The story of Santiago tells us that life is not smooth sailing.

True wise people never escape pain, but live calmly and calmly in the experience of life.

The pain you experience should not be a stumbling block to life, but your path to happiness.

Click "Watching" and may the rest of our lives be less obsessive and more relieved; less painful, more open-minded.
