Zhao Yuanren

Zhao Yuanren, together with Liang Qichao, Wang Guowei and Chen Yinke, is known as the four tutors of the Tsinghua Institute of Chinese Studies, known as the father of Chinese and Chinese dialects, he has both liberal arts and sciences, and has a high degree of achievement in physics, philosophy, literature, music and other aspects.

Zhao Yuanren was born in Tianjin on November 3, 1892 (his ancestral home is Changzhou). As a teenager, he showed an amazing talent for language.

At the end of the Qing Dynasty, Zhao Yuanren's grandfather was an official in the north. While the young Zhao Yuanren lived with his family in Beijing and Baoding, he learned Beijing and Baoding dialects from his nanny. When he returned to his hometown of Changzhou at the age of 5, his family hired a local tutor for him, and he learned Changzhou dialect again. Later, I learned Changshu dialect from my great aunt and Fuzhou dialect from my aunt.

When he was admitted to The Jiangnan Higher School in Nanjing at the age of 15, only 3 of the 270 students in the school were authentic Nanjing, and he learned the authentic Nanjing dialect from these 3 Nanjing students. Once, the school held a dinner party, the students at the same table were from all over the country, zhao Yuanren was able to talk to the people at the same table in 8 dialects. It was also because of this matter that Zhao Yuanren received a nickname of "Brother Zhao".

In July 1910, Zhao Yuanren was admitted to the second place in the Qing Court Tourism Aesthetic Affairs Office in Beijing (this recruitment scored a total of 70 places). In August of the same year, he went to the United States and entered Cornell University to study mathematics, taking physics and music.

It is worth mentioning that Mr. Hu Shi, who is familiar to us, scored 55 in this examination, and Mr. Hu Shi called Zhao Yuanren "the first person in the United States".

In 1914, Zhao Yuanren received a bachelor's degree in science. In 1915, Zhao Yuan entered Harvard University to major in philosophy and continued to study music. In 1918, Zhao Yuan received a doctorate in philosophy from Harvard University. In 1919, Zhao Yuanren taught in the Department of Physics at Cornell University. In the following year, he briefly taught at Tsinghua University, and Zhao Yuanren had a habit of only teaching and solving puzzles, but did not like to be an official, because at that time the school planned to appoint Zhao Yuanren as the leader of the school, and after Zhao Yuanren politely refused, he traveled to Europe.

On March 14, 1924, Cao Yunxiang, then president of Tsinghua University, issued a letter of appointment for Zhao Yuanren, inviting him to return to China to teach, because Zhao Yuanren's further studies in Europe had not yet been completed, and it would take another year, zhao Yuanren promised to return to China after the completion of further studies.

In 1925, Zhao Yuanren was invited to return to China, but there was a small episode in the middle. At that time, Guo Bingwen, the president of Southeast University, was dismissed from the post of president by the Beiyang government, and the position of president of Southeast University became vacant. Many influential professors in the education circles who learned of Zhao Yuanren's return to China agreed that with knowledge and ability, the position of president of Southeast University was none other than Zhao Yuanren, and as long as he was mentioned to him, Zhao Yuanren would definitely take over this position.

So while planning to pick up the wind and dust for him, he prepared a letter of appointment and all the entry procedures for him. Zhao Yuanren returned from Europe to get off the ship, and after the person who picked him up told him about inviting him to be the president of Southeast University, Zhao Yuanren did not want to be the president, so he went to the hostel, secretly went to buy a ferry ticket, and prepared to go to Beijing overnight. Due to the shortage of tickets at that time, the first class and the second class had been booked, and Zhao Yuanren had to buy an ordinary cabin. The people who did not receive Zhao Yuanren once thought that Zhao Yuanren had an accident. It can be seen that Zhao Yuanren is also fighting hard enough to avoid the position of principal.

After returning to Beijing, Zhao Yuanren became a professor at Tsinghua University. Due to the lack of multi-faceted professional professors in Tsinghua University after the initial reform at that time. During this period, Zhao Yuanren also taught more than a dozen courses such as mathematics, physics, Chinese phonology, general linguistics, modern Chinese dialects, Chinese musical score and western music appreciation.

Even if he teaches so many majors at the same time, Zhao Yuanren is still at ease. It is also because of his outstanding contribution to Tsinghua. Tsinghua University, along with Liang Qichao, Wang Guowei and Chen Yinke, is known as Tsinghua's "Four Great Mentors".

In 1930, some people in China proposed to phoneticize Hanyu Pinyin, and there was a growing trend, and Zhao Yuanren, who learned of this matter, wrote a 96-character (including the title) qiwen in the United States, "Shi's History of Eating Lions" to express his clear opposition to Hanyu Pinyin.

Shi Shi, a poet of the stone chamber, loves lions and swears to eat ten lions. Shi Shi is always suitable for the city to see the lion. At ten o'clock, suitable for ten lions suitable for the city. It is time to adapt to the city of Shi Shi. Shi Shi regarded it as the Ten Lions, and the Ten Lions died. The clan is a corpse of ten lions, a suitable stone chamber. The stone chamber is wet, and the clan makes the stone chamber. Stone chamber swab, Shi Shi's first trial food is the corpse of ten lions. When eating, the first consciousness is the corpse of ten lions, and the corpse of ten stones of lions. Trial release is a thing.

After reading this article, many people think that this is an ancient and strange text, and it is difficult for someone to surpass it in a thousand years, because it is pronounced the same as 96 words.

After 1938, due to the impact of the invasion of China and the turmoil in the civil war, Zhao Yuanren, who devoted himself to teaching, returned to the United States and taught for a long time.

After the founding of New China, although he was abroad, Zhao Yuanren never forgot his motherland and repeatedly contributed to the country. He has made great contributions to the cultural exchanges, character reform, linguistics, and social sciences of the motherland.

Zhao Yuanren is also talked about by people and his wife Yang Buwei's 60-year love story, which has been loyal for decades.
