There is a record in the Old Book of Tang that Tang Taizong asked Li Zhi, "What do you think is the most important thing in this Book of Filial Piety?" Li Zhi replied: "Filial piety is the most important, serving his parents at an early age, serving the king when he grows up, and finally achieving the purpose of self-cultivation." When a gentleman serves the king, he goes to the temple and thinks of being loyal to the country, and when he retreats home, he thinks that it is to advise the monarch's fault and correct his evil. When Tang Taizong heard this, he said, "If you act according to this, you will be able to serve your father and brother well and be a good courtier." Thus it can be seen that Tang Gaozong Li Zhi knew how to be a filial piety child from a young age. However, it was precisely because of his rare filial piety that he laid a solid foundation for his future ascension to the throne.

Emperor Taizong of Tang decided to pass the throne to his fourth son, Li Tai the Prince of Wei, and wanted to make Li Tai crown prince. For the eldest grandson Wuji, this is a matter of shunshui, that is, punishing his opponents and pandering to the monarch, why not enjoy it. And Tang Gaozong also killed two birds with one stone, that is, he completed his own ministers, sold a favor, and eliminated the voyeurs of his own throne. After this incident, the major threat to Emperor Gaozong's throne was eradicated.
