The Nimitz sailed away from the Middle East, the U.S. Department of Defense: staying here is not in line with U.S. needs

On the 2nd local time, John Kirby, the press secretary of the US Department of Defense, said that the "Nimitz" aircraft carrier strike group, which had previously carried out deterrence tasks in the waters near the Middle East, left the Middle East and sailed to the Indo-Pacific region.

According to Al Jazeera reported on the 3rd, Kirby said that the Biden administration believes that leaving the "Nimitz" in the Middle East is not in line with the national security needs of the United States. Kirby said Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin considered a broader geostrategic situation when approving the nimitz's withdrawal from the Central Command security zone, but Kirby did not say whether there would be other carriers traveling to the Middle East in the future.

Previously, there were reports that Austin had ordered the Nimitz to return to the U.S. mainland over the weekend, and Al Jazeera reported that Kirby had not confirmed such reports. He also declined to disclose the current Defense Department's assessment of potential military threats to U.S. bases and its Gulf allies.

According to previous reports, the Nimitz arrived in the Gulf in November 2020, and at the end of December of the same year, the then acting defense minister Chris Miller asked the Nimitz to return directly to the United States after ending its support for U.S. forces in Somalia. However, on the first anniversary of the assassination of Sulaimani, a senior general of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, in response to the continued tensions in relations with Iran, Miller asked nimitz to change its plan to return to the United States at the beginning of this year and continue to stand by in the Middle East to deal with the Iranian threat. Al Jazeera reported that the Biden administration's withdrawal of the Nimitz from the Middle East could ease tensions with Iran. It is reported that this is the first time that the US Navy aircraft carrier has been "absent" from the Middle East since May 2019.
