The U.S. Navy said the USS Nimitz (CVN-68) returned to port after "minor material defects" in its propulsion units.

"On November 7, 2021, the USS Nimitz (CVN 68) discovered a slight material defect in its propulsion unit while sailing in international waters off the west coast of the continental United States during normal operation," Cmdr said. Navy Air Force spokesman Zach Harrell said in a statement. "The crew took action to resolve the defect and the vessel returned to port. This defect does not pose any risk to the ship, propulsion, crew or the environment. ”

Nimitz has been working on maintenance in Bremerton, Washington, since returning home from a lengthy deployment in March.

The carrier left port for the first time on Saturday, according to The Kitsap Sun, meaning the crew discovered a defect in the propulsion device the day after sailing.

Harrell said in a statement: "The Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility will undergo a comprehensive assessment and carry out any necessary repairs prior to the vessel's next voyage. ”

Harrell said that in addition to the reactor problem, planned maintenance and offshore trials to test repairs have been completed.

Kitsap Sun first reported a shortage of propulsion and the return of the Nimitz to port.
