Mexican director Alessandro González Iñárredo's debut. The work of 2000, as soon as it was born, attracted the world's admiration and praise: a masterpiece with an extremely novel structure and great talent. The film is not only an innovation in narrative, but also reflects the social landscape on multiple levels, which is amazing for the talent of the choreographer.
Like films like Pulp Fiction and The Rainstorm Is Coming, Gonzalez's films are mostly structured in an unusual way, and that's what I like the most.
The film is made up of three different stories, and the relationship between the protagonist and the dog in the story is also a symbol of their own destiny. The film begins with a wonderful speeding car chase in Mexico City, the boy carrying a black dog on the road, followed by an oncoming impact, the boy's side of the dog flipped over, the beautiful woman in the opposite car was bleeding, and the scavenger on the side quietly watched all this and quietly left.
In the first story, the boy is in love with his pregnant sister-in-law and wants to take her away from his brother who works in the supermarket during the day and grabs the supermarket at night, so he takes his dog to participate in a dog fighting competition;
The beauty in the second story is a supermodel who lives with her boyfriend who left her wife, and after her dog falls into a trap, she finds herself trapped in a car accident;
In the last story, the old man, who was a former guerrilla, accidentally picked up the dying black dog and reunited with his long-lost daughter.
All three intersecting stories are all about dogs and all about love.
The literal translation of the film is "Love Dog", but the American translation of the film as love's a bitch is quite ironic. In people's view, the dog is a poor animal, never will only bow to people, but how noble people are, are all animals led by desire, a car accident not only changed the fate of people in 3 stories, but also reflected some different views of love, values, always said that love does not need a reason, but if love is a dog mother? We are nothing more than a bunch of bitches manipulated by love.
My favorite of the three stories is the last one.
At first glance, it seems that this story has nothing to do with love, but his love for his wife and daughter is the source that really makes him change his face and return to his essence. From the beginning, this white-haired old man gave people an inviolable and fierce impression, but when he was young, he once abandoned his wife and son for his ideals or private thoughts, and in his old age, he could only comfort himself by fornicating with the happy life of his wife and daughter, and the dogs that had accompanied him also left him one by one.
At the end of the film, when the old man is crying hysterically on the phone, the audience is deeply moved: there is nothing happier in the world than holding the hand of the person you love when the years have passed and the hair is getting white. So, cherish what you have, and don't ask for things that don't belong to you.
Finally, to quote a short review that I prefer:
Love is chaotic, like a shaky shot.
- Love is blind, like two dogs that do not know whether they are dead or alive, desperately fighting aimlessly.
- Love is helpless, just like the choices you make that you can't regret.
- Love is bloody, like taking someone else's life.
- Love is despicable, just as it is born to be betrayed.
- Love is blind, just as you can't see each other's flaws or the strengths of those around you.
- Love is a dog's, just like the original wild nature of animals, and reason cannot be stopped.
