Tuoba Si was the eldest son of Tuoba Jue and was made crown prince. After Liu Gui's birth was tuoba, in order to prevent foreign relatives from monopolizing power, Emperor Daowu gave Liu Guiren to death. When Tuoba Si later heard the cause of his mother's death, he wept bitterly and was very sad. When his father, Tuoba Jue, learned of this, he was greatly annoyed and ordered him to be summoned, but Tuoba Si did not dare to enter the palace to see him, so he went out on a parade.
Tuoba Shao, in order to save his mother, jumped into the palace at night and stabbed his father Tuoba Jue to death. Upon hearing the news, Tuoba Si rushed back to the capital and contacted the ministers to kill Tuoba Shao and quell the coup. At the age of 17, Tuoba Si became emperor. He was the second emperor of the Northern Wei Dynasty.
Tuoba Si was a Ming emperor who reused the eight ministers of the first dynasty with great moral standing to advise him and deal with all major events at home and abroad. At the same time, he also issued an edict to recruit wise men and talents throughout the country.
During Tuoba Si's reign, he paid attention to the development of agricultural production, paid attention to the people's livelihood, helped the poor, advocated frugality, and reduced the burden of the people, making the Northern Wei a powerful country in the Huanghe River Valley. During his more than 10 years in power, he greatly expanded the territory of Northern Wei.
In January 423, Tuoba Si died of illness during the conquest of Rouran, reigning for 15 years, at the age of 32, with the title of Emperor Mingyuan and the title of Emperor Taizong.
