When she was a child, someone asked Yu Hong what she wanted to do when she grew up? She said casually, painter. In 1974, she began to study painting at the Children's Palace in Beijing. That year, Yu Hong was 8 years old.
Yu Hong in college
Born in 1966, the Beijing girl graduated from the Oil Painting Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts and later worked as an art editor. Because of the difficult birth, the mother got her like holding a piece of jewelry. When she was two or three years old, Yu Hong was sent to the countryside of Tongzhou with her mother, not to let herself run wildly, her mother often threw her a paintbrush, and Yu Hong's painting enlightenment began here.

In 1980, Yu Hong was very assertive and told her mother that she was going to attend the Academy of Fine Arts Affiliated High School. Yu Hong, who was 18 years old at the time, was known as a genius girl and a school flower of the Central Academy of Fine Arts. She and Liu Xiaodong became classmates and walked together. In 1984, the couple entered the third studio of CAFA Oil Painting Department, and their first assignment was "David".
Yu Hong said: "David is Michelangelo's masterpiece, with a sense of volume and beauty, a whole and details, which is a more difficult subject and a compulsory course in the Academy of Fine Arts. "She was very involved in painting 'David' and painted it for a total of 4 weeks. Later, this "David" was selected into the textbook, and she became famous at the age of 18.

Finally, Yu Hong and her classmate Liu Xiaodong walked together. They were married in 1992 while traveling in the United States. After graduating from university, Yu Hong stayed on to teach, and Liu Xiaodong was assigned to the Affiliated Middle School of the Academy of Fine Arts, and the two lived together. Like most women in the world, she went through the process of love, marriage, and family, and eventually became a mother.

1994 was an important challenge for Yu Hong: her daughter was born. Yu Hong said: "The day my daughter was born was very impressed, born completely different from what I imagined, I originally imagined that she was a white and fat child, in fact, she was a purple-red, like a child with the color of internal organs, her eyes were very large, like a layer of oil, you can't see through it." The doctor put her on top of me, and I kept looking at her like this and started crying, about half an hour. ”

At that time, Liu Xiaodong left at 8 o'clock in the morning, Yu Hong sat on the sofa with her child in her arms, and she began to cry before she could go to the toilet. "She was crying, and I was crying, and I didn't know how to raise this child."

In the early 1990s, the political pop and cynical realism in the domestic contemporary art circle were popular, but Yu Hong paid more attention to the lives and inner experiences of the young people around her in her creation, and she depicted a group of young people with different forms on a monochrome background, known as the "new generation of artists".
From the beginning of the "Witness Growth" series in 1999 to 2008, Yu Hong has been creating the "Witness Growth" series of works for ten years, which tell the story of the changes in her eyes through the comparison of the individual and the times. From the "Witness Growth" series, "Her" to "Clouds", Yu Hong has been thinking about "what do people really want to do?" behind her creation. She asked herself: "People basically don't know what they are going to do, they just live there." I don't know what I'm doing. ”
In 2007, Yu Hong painted "Ladder of Heaven" and began to draw real life in the form of religious painting. In 2012, "Clouds" began to penetrate deeply into people's hearts, but its concern for the ultimate problem and compassion for people's situation still makes it still have a strong sense of religion. It wasn't until 2016 that her latest solo exhibition, "A Dream in the Garden," returned to her alma mater— 26 years after her first group exhibition at the CAFA Art Museum.
