Hainan peacock pheasant, Hainan mountain partridge, round-nosed monitor lizard... A few days ago, in the Hainan Parrot Ridge Animal and Plant Museum located in the Pilot Area of the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park System, specimens of rare birds and exotic animals attracted visiting media reporters and tourists to stop and watch.

"The parrot ridge area has dense vegetation and rich species..." Mai Yan, a science popularization worker who has been rooted here for 11 years, focuses on introducing the colorful ecological business card of parrot ridge to people, in his view, only by helping people to understand more about parrot ridge can we more effectively promote the protection of this tropical rainforest and more intuitively feel the ecological advantages of Hainan.

In order to let the media reporters better understand the unique charm of the "treasure house of species" of Parrot Ridge, Mai Yan found a ranger and led everyone to start a journey of patrolling the mountain from parrot mouth.

Step by step, there is life in the tranquility

"Be careful, don't let the ant burrow into the pant leg, find a rope to tie the pant leg tightly" "Don't step on the empty, don't trip over the roots" "Try to arch your body as much as possible to climb up"... This year's National Day Golden Week, autumn rains and rains have increased the difficulty of the rangers' mountain patrol work. Along the way, Mai Yan and his party of rangers opened the way ahead, turning back from time to time to remind several media reporters who were traveling.

Tread through rugged trails, through dense jungle... Along the way, they carefully climbed small hills, marveling at the wonders of the extroverted and exotic roots of the shell family, the huge leaves of the Tiannanxing family, the old stems and flowers of the Mulberry family, the flying of wooden vines, and the hanging gardens of floating ferns and orchids.

The Hainan Daily reporter noticed that the sound of birds and beasts flashing rapidly in the bushes around him was heard from time to time, but when everyone tried to follow the sound, it was difficult to see them.

"The figure that just ran away may be a small spirit cat" "You see, it is a red-bellied squirrel that is eating the fruit of the tree"... Fu Huiquan, the ranger who accompanied him on the day, gave everyone a vivid rainforest science lesson while walking, "This season, the river in Parrot Ridge is also very lively, there are horizontal loach, dotted silver bass, Ziling kiss goby, etc., sometimes a kilometer or two of the river can find more than a dozen kinds of fish." ”

After a while, sweat stains soaked the clothes on the back, and the group stopped by a mountain stream to take a nap. The reporter noticed that the trees, old vines, rock walls, springs and sunlight shining through the branches of the light spots in front of him were intertwined, and from time to time there were pleasant cicadas chirping birds in the ears, and the originally quiet tropical rainforest began to lively...

Behind the scenes, a piece of Dan heart is a mountain forest

Fu Huiquan recalled that in the early years, when the crowd patrolled the mountains and encountered a rainstorm, they could not continue to move forward or retreat, and it was late at night, so they could only hide wet and sleep in the depths of the stone wall. The rain made everyone unable to make a fire for warmth, nor could they cook, and they were cold and hungry and could not sleep, "Often this side just helped his companions catch the ants on their legs, but found that their own thighs also began to itch, lifted the pants to see, there are also several ants greedily attached to the legs to suck blood ..."

"The fog in the mountains is heavy, and it will rain often, and since I have been calling Parrot Ridge for all these years, the clothes on my body have not dried every time I enter the mountains and forests, and I have stuck wet on my body, and after a long time, I have a smell..." Mai Yan interjected from time to time and quipped. In recent years, it has been much better, the unit has equipped us with tents, sleeping bags, zippers can be tightened to separate ants, mosquitoes, change into quick-drying clothes are also convenient for sleep. Mai Yan said.

As an important part of the pilot area of the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park system, Parrot Ridge was approved as a provincial nature reserve in 2004 and ranked as a national nature reserve in 2014, which is also the "youngest" national nature reserve in Hainan.

Since 2007, including Mai Yan, a total of more than 30 college students from all over the country have rushed to Parrot Ridge to carry out ecological scientific research and science popularization work, they have measured the mountain with their feet, popularized ecological and environmental protection knowledge for the surrounding villagers, trained a group of villager rangers to become "soil experts" in the tropical rainforest, and established and continuously improved the ecological "archive" of Parrot Ridge in the process of exploration.

A feast for the eyes, rare birds and exotic animals in the museum to read

Take a deep breath in the rainforest, play by the babbling spring... In parrot ridge, you can truly feel the charm of rainforest ecology. However, due to various conditions, such a difficult and pleasant journey is not for everyone to experience, how can more people understand the treasures hidden in Parrot Ridge?

"Popular science." Ecological researchers who have been guarding parrot ridge with care and affection for many years have given the answer. Among them, the Hainan Parrot Ridge Animal and Plant Museum is a comprehensive publicity and education scientific research base integrating science popularization, scientific research, species breeding, wildlife rescue and other functions, and the museum treasures and exhibits about 12,000 animal and plant specimens, which can be called a "condensed version" of Parrot Ridge.

Here, people can learn with pictures and texts that the "strange" names such as Hainan Yellow Beef Porcini Mushroom, Daoyinchuan Algae, Red Gai lanmao Porcini mushroom, and Flat Ground Small Leather Umbrella all belong to the "new species of Parrot Ridge"; Here, you can also see the very rare national Grade I protected plant slope base, Bole tree, etc.; Here, Hainan warty salamander, Hainan creek tree frog, Hainan turbulence frog, Hainan pseudo-toad and other amphibians of Hainan endemic species can make "animal fans" feast their eyes.

Mai Yan introduced that as of now, Parrot Ridge has recorded more than 4,000 species of animals and plants, and according to statistics, 510 species of vertebrates, including 92 species of freshwater fish, 119 species of amphibians and reptiles, 250 species of birds, and 49 species of mammals, including 9 species of national I. protected animals and 65 species of national II. protected animals. In addition, there are 2323 species of vascular plants, 2078 species of native wild vascular plants, etc.

Especially in recent years, the Parrot Ridge Area has successively edited and published popular science books such as "Parrot Ridge Orchid Plant Atlas", "Hainan Parrot Ridge Bird Atlas", "Hainan Parrot Ridge Amphibian and Reptile Atlas", and actively organized various science popularization education activities into the campus, aiming to gradually "condense" the tropical rainforest of Parrot Ridge into popular science books, so that more rainforest science knowledge can enter thousands of households.
