Liu Lei, Principal of Kowloon School in Longhui County: The Beauty of Education In the Herding Mind

"Teenage" magazine reporter Yu Ya Peng Meilin correspondent Dai Zhihong

Liu Lei, 42, is the principal of Kowloon School in Longhui County, Shaoyang City.

He named his WeChat "Urban Shepherd", and the WeChat avatar was the scene of the county town. In the photo, the Zhaoshui River runs through the city. On the banks of the river, the city is busy.

The moment he took the picture, he said, he thought about the students he had taught. They came from the countryside to the county seat to study, and after a short stay, they went to a distant place to find the future.

And Liu Lei, playing the role of a shepherd of hearts, accompanies them to grow up poetically on the banks of this river.

Long, it was the teacher's shadow

24 years ago, Liu Lei graduated from the middle school, embarked on the teaching post, and went to the Hengbanqiao Luozi Regiment, which is 30 kilometers away from the county seat of Longhui. A "teacher" made him excited, nervous, and happy in his heart.

At that time, Liu Lei took the third grade, and he taught mathematics, physical education, art, and science. Rural schools rarely offered art classes, and he bought drawing paper and oil sticks from the county seat. During class, he asked students to move chairs out of the classroom, showed them mountains in the distance, trees, landscapes and people nearby, and then taught them to draw.

"Those children who are usually naughty have become serious. They clutched the paint stick and drew it intently, afraid of missing a detail. Until now, Liu Lei still remembers the scene at that time, which is the joy of teaching people to fish.

Liu Lei just joined the work and his income is not high, but he is willing to spend money for students. He buys painting materials for his students. Because of him, the student used the oil paint stick for the first time, and for the first time "saw" how the compass drew a perfect circle on the blackboard.

He was also willing to spend time. At that time, students dropped out of school from time to time. He went to each student's home to visit their home, see their living environment, communicate with the parents of the children, and persuade the students who dropped out of school to come back one by one.

The students loved the big brother-like young teacher. Sometimes Liu Lei went to visit his home, and the students followed him. Liu Lei was not tall, but the shadow under the sunset was stretched very long. The shadow was captured by the students, painted in the painting, written in the composition, and warmed them to each other.

Gentle, that is the awakening of the heart

In 2001, Liu Lei was admitted to the city from the countryside and began to teach in the county seat.

He loves to laugh, has a gentle personality, is kind, and easily mingles with students. For this reason, he became a counselor in the Young Pioneers, and later, he was transferred to the middle school as the secretary of the Youth League Committee. In 2011, Lau Lei was hired as Vice Principal of the newly built Kowloon School in charge of moral education, safety and student work.

"Integrate the truth into the matter and express it in a gentle way, and the children will gladly accept it." Liu Lei said that the child's heart is soft, and it should be gentle and let them grow up freely and beautifully.

At Long Hui Kowloon School, 60% of its students come from rural and suburban areas. When the first-grade students of primary school first entered the school, Liu Lei invited parents to the school and pulled them into the camp of educating people: parents had to take their children to do at least ten minutes of housework every day, wash clothes, clean, cook... Involve your child and teach them how to live subtly.

This is Liu Lei's insistence: awakening, not shaping; guiding, not instilling.

He wanted his students to fall in love with reading, so he customized a booklet for them, providing a reading list for their parents to read and write down reading notes together. In the six years of primary school, more than two hundred books, adults and children walked together, and completed a spiritual journey.

When students enter junior high school, Liu Lei encourages them to participate in social practice and volunteer activities. "In other people's stories, learn to persevere, learn to contribute." Liu Lei is reluctant to imprison students in the classroom. He said: "Let them grow into people with rich hearts in the world outside of the campus." ”

What is alive and natural, that is the beauty of education

We asked Liu Lei how to define the beauty of students. He said that the beauty of man should be alive, natural, and cannot be defined.

In his early years, he taught his students to draw without rules and regulations, only giving them a blank piece of paper and letting them do whatever they wanted. Later, he became the principal, and he did not use the score to draw the ground as a prison. He always wanted to break down some boring, stereotypical boundaries, so that students could grow more branches like trees in nature.

There are students who love music. Liu Lei selected the "lark" seedlings, formed a choir, and invited professional vocal teachers to concentrate on teaching. These mountain children, their voices clear, innocent and messy. They sang from the county seat to the provincial capital, all the way to the national stage.

Some students are fascinated by traditional culture. Liu Lei opened the calligraphy class to each class and held a calligraphy competition every year. He invited teachers and students to compete on the same stage. They splash ink and feel the beauty of tradition in the ink color.

There are students who are active. Liu Lei set up different sports. During the recess time, on the playground of Kowloon School, the lower grade students do exercises, the senior students practice football, basketball, volleyball... The red school uniform burned like a flame.

Ten years after its establishment, Kowloon School has become a national football characteristic school, a national basketball characteristic school, a national education advanced collective, a national youth theme education demonstration school, a civilized campus in Hunan Province, and a base school for Chinese excellent traditional culture. Many children open up another possibility in life through their artistic and sports expertise.

Not long ago, Shaoyang City was selected as the "Most Beautiful Campus", and Kowloon School stood out from more than 2,500 schools and became the only winner. Some people say that kowloon schools are beautifully built. In fact, the perspective of this selection is comprehensive, focusing on the beauty of humanistic education, the beauty of cultivation education, and the beauty of quality education. Liu Lei said that the beauty of education has never been the beauty of architecture, but the abundance and beauty of people's hearts.
