▲ Zhu Changluo died suddenly a month after he took the throne

In 1620, forty-eight years after Zhu Yijun became emperor, he died unexpectedly, and the crown prince Zhu Changluo ascended to the emperor's throne, and the next year he changed his era name to Taichang. However, he had only been sitting in the Golden Ruan Treasure Hall for a month, and then he suddenly died.

It turned out that when Emperor Shenzong was alive, Concubine Zheng Guifei desperately tried to exclude Zhu Changluo and opposed the establishment of Zhu Changluo as crown prince. After Guangzong ascended the throne, he was deeply afraid that Guangzong would hate her, so he hollowed out his mind and tried everything to please Guangzong. She selected eight of the most beautiful maids from the palace and dedicated them to the Guangzong. Guangzong was already weak, and with the fact that he had to deal with the eight beautiful women who had to be offered by Concubine Zheng Guifei every night, he had more than enough heart and insufficient strength, so he emptied his foundation, and soon Guangzong was seriously ill and bedridden.

At first, the internal physician Cui Wensheng entered the palace to diagnose and treat Guangzong. After Cui Wensheng's diagnosis, he said that Guangzong was an evil heat connotation, and should be given a tongli medicine, so he prescribed rhubarb, plaster and other items as medicines, and the emperor drank it (he did not know whether he knew what was added to this medicine, if I did not dare to eat), suddenly abdominal pain and intestinal sound, diarrhea, one day and one night, as many as forty-three times, for several days, resulting in a more serious illness. The tai doctor who treated the emperor's illness is still like this, and we will not complain anymore when we meet a quack doctor today.

Later, Li Kezhuo, the secretary of the Hongxu Temple, described a red pill he had refined as an elixir and offered it to the emperor for treatment, which was rejected by the cabinet ministers. But When Guangzong learned of this, he asked to take his medicine. After taking a red pill, I felt much more comfortable, thought about eating, and took another pill in the afternoon, but unexpectedly, in the early morning of the next day, Guangzong died. The ministers were suspicious of Guangzong's death, and Yang Lian and others believed that this incident was the same conspiracy as the previous "attack case", and it was also the work of Zheng Guifei behind the scenes, cui Wensheng and Li Kezhao. But because there is no evidence to check, there is nothing to do. This is the "Red Pill Case", which is known as the second of the "Three Cases of the Late Ming Dynasty".

After Emperor Guangzong's death, his favored concubine Li Xuanshi (李宣侍) was a courtesan of the surname Li. Ming Dynasty concubine titles: empress, concubine, concubine, concubine, Zhaoyi... Electress...] He immediately took control of the emperor's eldest son, Zhu Youxiao, and performed a harem drama of power and profit.

Due to the early death of Zhu Youxiao's biological mother Wang Cairen, after Emperor Guangzong ascended the throne, Li Xuanshi took Zhu Youxiao from Ciqing Palace [Ciqing Palace is usually the place where the prince lived] to take residence in Qianqing Palace. The Qianqing Palace was originally the main palace, where the Heavenly Son and the Empress lived. After Emperor Guangzong's death, Li Xuanshi, as empress dowager, should withdraw from the Qianqing Palace and let the new Tianzi stay. But now she didn't have the slightest intention of giving in, she just wanted to kidnap the fifteen-year-old young emperor Zhu Youxiao and her mother and son in the same palace, so as to "hang the curtain and weigh the rules."

When Wang An, an old eunuch who had been reading with the Prince's Eastern Palace, saw this situation, he was deeply disturbed in his heart, and he quickly brought out a letter to contact the courtiers outside the palace, told them of this worry, and asked them for help. After hearing this news to Yang Lian, he immediately said to the ministers Zhou Jiamo and Li Ruhua:

"The matter of social welfare is of great importance, and Li Xuanshi is a treacherous person, not a person who can be orphaned. The new king is young and has no biological mother to rely on, in case there is a change in the palace, my generation will become a sinner in the world. It is time to enter the palace immediately to meet the heir apparent, and to proclaim him to the throne at once, just in case of an accident. He also asked Li Xuanshi to move to the Luan Palace. ”

All the courtiers thought it was reasonable, that is, they asked to enter the Qianqing Palace to cry and ask to see the emperor's eldest son.

However, Li Xuan sent eunuchs with sticks to guard the Qianqing Gate and prevent the ministers from entering the palace. Yang Lian shouted:

"The emperor is on a big move, and you still want to block the entry of the courtiers, who made you do this?"

The eunuchs were overwhelmed by the momentum and had to let the ministers in. After crying, Liu Yiyi, a cabinet scholar, did not see the eldest son of the emperor and asked for a meeting. At this time, Li Xuanshi blocked the emperor's eldest son from the warm cabinet and did not allow the minister to enter. Liu Yiyi waited for no one to comply, gathered in the palace, and shouted to see the new Tianzi. At this time, Wang An entered Li Xuan's attendant and said:

"When the minister enters, the eldest son of the emperor should go out to meet the ministers, and return after the meeting."

Li Xuanshi was speechless, so he had to let Zhu Youxiao go out to meet with the group of ministers. However, Zhu Youxiao was helped out of the Qianqing Palace, and was immediately welcomed by all the courtiers to the Wenhua Palace, and was immediately sent to the Ciqing Palace, preparing for the emperor to live here temporarily and then ascend the throne on a later date.

▲ The ministers moved the little emperor Zhu Youxiao to the Wenhua Hall

Li Xuanshi lost control of the little emperor and lost first. However, she was still unwilling, and simply lived in the Qianqing Palace and did not leave, so that the enthronement ceremony could not be implemented on time.

The official Shangshu Zhou Jiamu first went to Shujin and asked Li Xuanshi to move out of the Qianqing Palace and live elsewhere. Subsequently, Zuo Guangdou, who was a royal historian, also wrote a letter, accusing Li Xuanshi of practicing despotism in the name of raising him. The manuscript says:

"The Qianqing Palace of the inner court is like the Imperial Pole Hall of the Outer Court, but the Emperor resides in heaven, and only the Empress has to live with heaven." The other concubines, although they enter the imperial court as subordinates, are not allowed to live permanently, not only to avoid suspicion, but also to respect and humble themselves. The present elected attendant is neither a concubine nor a biological mother, but is like a dignified residence in the main palace, while His Highness is retired to the Ciqing Palace, and is not allowed to keep a few scepters, perform great gifts, put his name upside down, and deceive his subjects. How could a person who had chosen to serve neither the virtue of serving the former emperor nor the grace of nurturing His Highness [referring to The Crown Prince Zhu Youxiao], entrust her with the Holy Father? And His Highness is sixteen years old in the Spring and Autumn Period, supplemented by loyal and honest old ministers on the inside, and supplemented by the public orphan QingYi on the outside, why worry about the lack of people, do you still have to breastfeed and be satisfied? When Ruizhe first opened, it was time to see what he wanted, so why should he rely on the hands of a woman? If we do not make a decision early now, we will use the name of raising them to practice the reality of despotism and steal the scourge of the Wu clan, and reappear in the present, and there will be those who cannot bear to speak in the future. ”

When Li Xuanshi saw that Zuo Guangdou wanted her to move out of the Qianqing Palace for various reasons, and compared her to the ambitious Wu Zetian, li xuanshi was so angry that he immediately ordered Zuo Guangdou to be summoned into the palace in an attempt to take advantage of the opportunity to kill him.

However, Zuo Guangdou did not accept the call at all, and he said sternly:

"I, the Heavenly Son Judge, also, cannot be summoned by the Son of Heaven. What a generation! ”

After all, Zhu Youxiao was only sixteen years old at the time, and under the persuasion of the courtiers and the temptation of Li Xuanshi, he was always undecided. It was not until the day of his ascension to the throne that he issued an edict for Li Xuanshi to be removed from the Qianqing Palace and moved to the Renshou Hall.

▲ Emperor Zhu Youxiao of the Apocalypse took the throne

With the help of a group of upright ministers such as Wang An, Yang Lian, and Zuo Guangdou, the new Tianzi Xizong was able to take the throne as scheduled, with the year name Of heaven, which was the second emperor to be replaced in a month. Soon after, the reputation of zuo guangdou, the "iron mask imperial history", was not far away in the folk.

The matter of asking Li Xuanshi to move out of the Qianqing Palace has become the third case in the "Three Cases at the End of the Ming Dynasty" - the "Case of Moving the Palace". Although these three cases at the end of the Ming Dynasty were not confusing, they remained entangled in the remaining years of the Ming Dynasty, and became a cannonball for the ministers of various factions of the ming dynasty to attack each other, causing great harm to the politics of the various dynasties.
