On November 27, 1950, the 9th Corps of the Chinese Volunteer Army launched a campaign to encircle and annihilate the US forces in Xinxingli, and Kong Qingsan, then the commander of the 5nd Squad of the 92nd Artillery Company of the 80th Division of the 27th Army, was ordered to lead the fifth squad to the main offensive force and perform the task of covering the assault troops. On the shores of Changjin Lake, ice and snow, Kong Qingsan wore a single suit and a single hat to lead the whole class of fighters to run more than 20 kilometers to reach the predetermined position in the valley. At this time, the assault troops were fiercely exchanging fire with the US troops, and the enemy suddenly opened fire at a bunker fire point, and the assault troops were blocked, forming a confrontational posture with the US troops.

Kong Qingsan immediately made a decision and used the 92-step gun to shoot directly, but it was cold and unable to build a position. At the critical moment, Kong Qingsan braved himself and resolutely used his shoulders to resist the artillery station and ordered the cannon to be fired. With the fire of the shell explosion, the American fire point was destroyed and the passage of the assault force was opened. However, the squad leader Kong Qingsan was hit by the recoil of the artillery, and his abdomen was hit by shrapnel, and he died heroically. In 1952, the headquarters of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army posthumously awarded him the title of "First Class Combat Hero of the Chinese Volunteer Army".
