Chen Li (1810-1882) was a famous scholar of the Qing Dynasty. The characters Lanfu and Lanpu, born in Mupaitou, Guangzhou, are known as Mr. Dongshu, and are natives of Panyu County, Guangzhou Province, Guangdong Province. In the twelfth year of the Qing Daoguang (1832), the sixth yinghui failed the test. He was successively employed as the head of Xuehai Hall and the head of Kikupo Jingshe Mountain. He has been teaching for decades and advocating simple learning, and many people have been created, forming the "Dongjuku School".
Chen Li studied astronomy, geography, music law, arithmetic, ancient Chinese, piao, filler words, and calligraphy, and wrote more than 120 kinds of works, including "Dongshu Reading Secretary", "Han Confucian Tongyi", "Sound Rhythm Tongkao" and so on. Chen Li also presided over the compilation and printing of the "Jupo Jingshe Collection", which collected the excellent textbooks of jupo jingshe students to benefit future learning. Chen Li was a Lingnan Confucian who was familiar with astronomical geography, musical arithmetic, and Piao Chinese filler words. Qian Mu once commented that Chen Li was "the second most important person in the late Qing Dynasty after Zeng Guofan, the main Han and Song dynasties in academic history, and advocated a new style of study."
Chen Li served as the head of Jupo Jingshe Mountain for 15 years, and trained many students who had become successful, including Liang Dingfen, Gui Wencan, Liao Tingxiang, Chen Botao, Tao Fuxiang, Wen Zhonghe, Huang Shaochang, Wen Tingshi, Yu Shimei, Wang Zhaoyong, Tan Zongjun, etc. In the seventh year of Guangxu (1881), the court rewarded Wupinqing with the title. On the 22nd day of the first month of the following year (March 11, 1882), he died of illness in Guangzhou.
