1. Introduction to the dancing poison moth
Lymantria disparL. (Asian Gypsy Moth), a genus of insects in the family Poison Moth, the poisonous moth, whose larvae mainly harm the leaves, can feed more than 500 species of plants, such as oak, poplar, willow, elm, apple, hawthorn, birch the most seriously affected, when severe can eat the whole leaf flakes. China's poison dance moth belongs to the Asian type of dance poison moth, which is listed as an important quarantine pest by many countries in the world.
Dancing poison moths often lay eggs in backlit places, such as the shady side of the trunk, crevices, holes, etc., each female lays 1 to 2 eggs, each 1 egg is composed of 300 to 600 eggs, up to 1000 grains, which is covered with melasmaline scales at the end of the female moth's abdomen. It can also attach to containers, freighters and other means of transport to spawn and migrate over long distances.

2. Quarantine regulations
Since 2007, the United States and Canada have paid great attention to the occurrence and spread of The Asian Dance Poison Moth in China, strengthened the targeted quarantine inspection of containers, ships and other means of transport and cargo in China, and the North American Plant Protection Organization (NAPPO) and the United States, Canada and other countries have successively formulated draft phytosanitary measures standards and regulations for means of transport and goods.
In 2013, Chile and in 2017, New Zealand issued regulations on phytosanitary measures for areas endemic to Asian moths.
On 22 January 2021, Australia announced the implementation of seasonal quarantine measures for the Asian-type dancing poison moth for ships entering the country.
Since 12 April 2021, Argentina has required ships departing from ports in northeast Asia and the Far East at 20° to 60° north latitude within 24 months to apply for a moth test before entering the country and obtain a "certificate of no Asian or Japanese moth ship", otherwise it is prohibited from entering the country.
On May 14, 2021, the United States notified the WTO of its proposed revision of the Special Procedures for Ships Entering the Asian Poison Moth Region, which will be implemented in 2022.
3. Monitoring of poison moths
Zoning
This is done within 5 km of the port and its perimeter, or within 5 km of the inland container distribution site. Sex trap traps are suspended from suitable trees or vertical objects within the confines of the port, in areas near the port, or around inland container distribution sites.
Time determined
Monitoring is carried out mainly during larval occurrence and adult flight.
Trap suspension
Traps may be hung or mounted on host trees in open space, in sunny areas that are not obscured by foliage, and on upright poles near the host or on the outer walls and corners of buildings. Trap heights from the ground should be convenient for inspection and maintenance, generally within a range of 1.5 to 2.5 meters.
It is recommended that each monitoring point be set up with 3 traps as a group, with a triangle hanging, and the spacing between the traps should be maintained at about 50 meters.
Inspection and maintenance
It is examined once a week before the adults appear, and every 15 days after the emergence of adults. It is necessary to ensure that the lure core is replaced in time every 15 days to ensure the effectiveness of the trap; if the trap is found to be damaged or lost during the inspection process, it should be replenished in time.
Conduct investigations
During the monitoring process, a simultaneous survey of the poison moth was carried out to observe the presence of larvae, as well as adult worms and egg masses, such as clusters, sagging or hazards, as well as adults and egg masses, within a range of 5 km around the port or inland container distribution site.
Quarantine spot checks
Quarantine inspections were carried out on the surfaces of all containers destined for north American countries such as the United States, Canada, Mexico and Chile for the presence of venomous moth eggs, larvae, pupae and adult insects.
Quarantine spot checks should be combined with inspections of container loaded cargo, including:
1. Tool preparation. Quarantine tools should be prepared before work, including flashlights, self-sealing bags, sampling bottles, labels, record pens, toolboxes, permethrin insecticides, etc.
2. Check for egg masses, adults and larvae. Carefully check the surface of the container, since the female of the Asian-type dancing moth has phototropism, pay attention to check whether there are adults and larvae under the lights, and whether there are egg masses around the lights or in the parts illuminated by the port lights.
3. Treatment method. Eggs, larvae and adults found should be eradicated, and the infected area should be sprayed with permethrin or other effective insecticides to kill pests, and if necessary, sampled and sent to the laboratory for identification. The identified specimens are soaked in anhydrous alcohol for review and research purposes.
4. Ship quarantine
Since March 2012, the North American Plant Protection Organization (NAPPO) Regional Standard No. 22 on Phytosanitary Measures (RSPM.33) has been fully implemented. The standard stipulates that ships transported from The Asian-type Dancing Moth-endemic areas (including Japan, China, South Korea, and the Russian Far East) to NAPPO member countries should be inspected by the Asian-type Dancing Moth at the last departure port of the exporting country and obtain the "Ship-free Asian-type Dancing Moth" certificate.
In order to prevent the poison moth from passing out of China's ports through means of transport such as goods, containers and ships, the ship is subject to quarantine inspection after consultation with the official quarantine department of North America. If the Asian-type dancing moth is found, measures will be taken to remove it, and if it is not found or removed by elimination, the "Ship No Asian-type Dancing Moth Inspection Certificate" will be obtained.
