Feng Yuxiang's father was an officer in the Huai Army under Li Hongzhang, and his official position was "team officer", equivalent to "company commander". Feng Yuxiang's father's salary is 30 taels of silver per month, which is equivalent to the current 10,000 yuan. At that time, the pork was 20 yuan a catty, and Feng Yuxiang's father's Feng Lu was enough to feed their family of five.

However, Feng Yuxiang's father liked to smoke opium cigarettes, and most of the Feng Lu in his hand was used to smoke a big cigarette, so the daily life of Feng Yuxiang's family was actually very difficult. At that time, in the Huai Army, many officers would get their families into the military register in order to get more money and supplement their lives.

"Yuxiang", the original "Imperial Fragrance" means to eat fragrant and spicy in front of the Imperial Palace
In 1893, the nineteenth year of Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty, This year Feng Yuxiang was 12 years old. Feng Yuxiang's father's unit was short of a soldier, and the personnel commander of the battalion headquarters asked the pipe belt (that is, the battalion commander) who would fill the vacancy.
This pipe belt surnamed Zhang, Zhang Pipe Belt is swallowing clouds and spitting mist on the bed, he sucked while saying: "Old Master Feng (Feng Yuxiang's father) and I have said many times, this time don't let others make up, let Old Master Feng's baby make up for it, go and ask Feng Team Officer's doll what is the name?" ”
So the personnel chief went to find Feng Yuxiang's father, but Feng Yuxiang's father went home and was not in the camp. The above urge to register is very urgent. Commander Zhang slapped his head on the door, make up one!
So I made up a "Feng Yuxiang", which means that you can eat delicious and spicy in front of the imperial court.
In fact, Feng Yuxiang's real name was "Feng Jishan", but the military status had already been reported and could not be changed, so he mistakenly changed his name to Feng Yuxiang.
After the fall of the Qing Dynasty, the Republic of China changed its name to Yuan, and Feng Yuxiang took the homophone and changed his name to Feng Yuxiang
Although Feng Yuxiang made up his military rank at the age of 12, because his age was too young, he did not really enlist in the army, but only named every month.
Feng Yuxiang's body developed rapidly, and after 2 years, that is, at the age of 14, his figure was already the same as that of an adult, so he began to officially become a soldier. Because he was tall and had a loud voice, both the pipe belt and the standard were willing to let him be a shouting operator.
He was also very hard-working, practicing aiming whenever he had time, hanging bricks on the gun, hanging another gun under the gun, and so on. Because of this, his shooting skills are very good, and he is known as a sharpshooter.
Qing Army's Shooting Training Manual
Before Feng Yuxiang became a soldier, he only studied private school for three months. After becoming a soldier, he saw the opportunity and rushed to learn cultural knowledge. It just so happened that his brother in the same shed, a man named You Heting, had a certain level of education. After practicing every day, Feng Yuxiang took the books "Romance of the Three Kingdoms", "Chronicles of the Nations", and "Liaozhai" and asked Lao You to teach him to read.
Feng Yuxiang's hard work made the Huaijun brothers who were scattered at that time very "annoyed". In today's parlance, "I'd rather exhaust myself than kill my classmates." At that time, his comrades ridiculed him, saying that he was an "official fan" and "official fan".
In particular, his shed chief laughed at him and said, "Lao Tzu has been a shed chief for 8 years, but he has not yet become an officer." If you become an official, Lao Tzu will retire from the army and go abroad. ”
When Feng Yuxiang was a soldier, he was very honest and did not like to fight with people, so many people took advantage of him and bullied him.
For example, when eating noodles, others often fish out the noodles, and give Feng Yuxiang a little noodle soup.
However, Feng Yuxiang's kindness also allowed him to make three brothers: You Heting, Gu Liangyou, and a guy who was particularly good at fighting. Whenever others bullied Feng Yuxiang, his three brothers would come to draw their swords to help.
The Qing army in training
Feng Yuxiang's efforts eventually paid off.
In 1895, Guangxu twenty-one years. Yuan Shikai was ordered to train troops at Xiaozhan and build a new army based on the German Army at that time. This army is well-equipped and well paid. The commander of the new army took a fancy to Feng Yuxiang of the Huai Army, so in the twenty-fourth year of Guangxu, that is, in 1898, Feng Yuxiang was transferred from the Huai Army to the New Army as a soldier and served in the sixth town of Beiyang.
The Beiyang New Army in training
Feng Yuxiang, who had been given the opportunity, worked harder to learn military training methods and martial arts, and became more attentive to cultural learning.
At that time, outside the camp in the sixth town, there was a stall, named Deng Changyao. This man is a down-and-out showman.
Feng Yuxiang's monthly salary at that time was 6 taels of silver. He took out two or two pieces of silver from inside and asked Deng Xiucai to give him 2 hours of lectures a day. Every night before going to bed, Feng Yuxiang reviewed the content of Old Deng's speech in bed.

Feng Yuxiang's classmate had a man named Li Jiantang. This person loves to find stubble, and every time Feng Yuxiang reads, he plays three strings on the side. Feng Yuxiang was practicing on the table, and he went to shake the table. Feng Yuxiang couldn't help it, and said, "When I read, you play the piano; when I practice writing, you shake the table. ”
Li Jiantang said: "You study, I play the piano, this is personal freedom; the table is public, you are allowed to write, I am not allowed to shake?" ”
Feng Yuxiang saw that he was incomprehensible, so he could only light a candle and read a book after the lights went out.
Li Jiantang also said that candles and lamp oil were squeezed from everyone's food, not Feng Someone's private property.
So Feng Yuxiang bought a candle to read by himself. At this time, Li Jiantang complained again, saying that he could not sleep at night when there was a light, which would affect the training the next day. So the squad leader could only order Feng Yuxiang to turn off the lights and go to sleep.
Because Feng Yuxiang's bunk was next to the wall, he dug a small niche in the wall, put the oil lamp in, and read with the light against the small hole in the niche, and at this time, Li Jiantang had nothing to say. This is quite similar to Kuang Heng, who chiseled the wall to steal the light.
In this way, Feng Yuxiang attended 2 hours of classes during the day and reviewed for two hours at night. In the past two years, he has read many classics and military books and mastered a lot of knowledge. This laid the foundation for him to be appreciated by his superiors.
Feng Yuxiang served in the Beiyang New Army, because of his hard work and loyalty and reliability, he was promoted from a small soldier to a squad leader, and from a squad leader to a sentry chief.
At that time, Duan Qirui, the commander of the Sixth Town, selected officers through examinations, and Feng Yuxiang ranked among the best in the examinations, and was successively promoted to company commander and deputy battalion commander (helper).
At that time, only a small number of Beiyang officers were promoted from grass-roots soldiers, and most of them were students studying in Japanese and German military academies. Many of them were the children of officials and eunuchs of the imperial court, and they did not bother to prepare for the examination.
Beiyang Duan Qirui
Feng Yuxiang relied on his own hard work to learn and practice, and won the first place in the examination and rose all the way. Therefore, in the sixth town at that time, there was a joke that "Feng Yuxiang died of an international student".
In 1903, that is, the twenty-ninth year of Guangxu. The Qing court opened the Army University. Requirements for recruiting students are:
First, the student must be under the age of 30;
Second, he had studied in a military academy abroad, or had to be an officer in the new army for more than 2 years.
Feng Yuxiang met the conditions of 2 years for officers under the age of 30 and above as lieutenants. However, most of the senior officers at that time had returned from staying in the Yang, and they used the condition that they had not stayed in the Yang to stubbornly block Feng Yuxiang and other officers of local origin and prevent them from taking the examination.
Feng Yuxiang said to the gang, "Today you will not let me go to Luda, and in the future Lao Tzu will set up a Luda himself!" ”
Feng Yuxiang in the Beiyang period
In 1913, Feng Yuxiang became the regimental commander and was stationed in Beijing, unfortunately suffering from back sores.
One of his friends, Liu Kuan, introduced him to a church hospital in the United States for treatment. American doctors always called the Law number "Amen" before and after the operation, which made Feng Yuxiang interested in Christianity.
Feng Yuxiang healed quickly, and under the influence of his friends, he also felt that it might be a gift from God that he was so good. He was baptized and joined the Christian Society of America and Israel. Therefore, people also call Feng Yuxiang "General Christ".

In 1925, Feng Yuxiang served as an army parade envoy and was ordered to train troops in Nanyuan, Beijing.
He set up a "senior officer training regiment," selected outstanding officers from various battalions and platoons as cadets, and hired a cadre of officers who had graduated from the University of The Mainland as instructors.
Although it does not have the name of the university, it is very similar in nature, and it is also a fulfillment of the vow of that year.
Later, Lu Da also opened a "special class" to recruit current military officers above lieutenant colonels and below lieutenant generals, but who had not attended Lu University, and studied for three years.
This time, Feng Yuxiang became a student of Lu University as he wished.

Repay grievances with virtue and treat "enemies" well
Li Jiantang, who was embarrassed by Feng Yuxiang at that time, was a hanger lang dang, and was soon dismissed by the new army and returned home. After Feng Yuxiang became an army inspection envoy, he sent someone to invite Li Jiantang to Nanyuan, gave him hospitality, and gave him a few hundred yuan so that he could settle down and start a business.
The subordinates did not understand, Feng Yuxiang said: "If it were not for Li Jiantang treating me like that, I would not have studied so hard. The worse the environmental conditions, the more people will want to pursue progress, so I should thank Li Jiantang."
