The Tumen River, a cross-border river originating in the eastern foothills of Changbai Mountain in northeast China, is a border river between China and Russia and North Korea. The Tumen River is 525 kilometers long. China and North Korea are divided into left and right banks of the Tumen River, with the 510-kilometer-long section of the China-North Korea River and the 15-kilometer-long Section of the Russian-North Korean River, with a total basin area of more than 33,000 square kilometers.
The Tumen River originates from the eastern foothills of the main peak of Changbai Mountain in the Border Area between China and North Korea, and flows from south to north and four counties and cities of Longshi, Longjing, Tumen and Hunchun. In the Jurchen period, the Tumen River was still an inland river in China, and local institutions were set up during the Ming Dynasty, but in the middle and late Ming Dynasty, as the Joseon Dynasty successively established six towns in the Tumen River area, Huining, Funing, Zhongcheng, Wencheng, Qingyuan and Qingxing, marking that the Tumen River became the border channel between China and North Korea.
The Tumen River was originally China's only route to the Sea of Japan, but the two unequal treaties signed in 1858 and the Beijing Treaty in 1860 led to the transfer of the coastal area of the Tumen River to Russia, and China lost the right to the sea of the Tumen River. At this point, the Tumen River, which was originally an inland river for China, became the dividing line between China, North Korea and Russia, and China also lost the only group of seas that directly connected to the Sea of Japan.
