After the enemy planes flew away, when the camp headquarters (the camp headquarters did not have a telephone) was preparing to continue to advance, Zhou Enlai's guard Fan Jinbiao came on horseback and asked breathlessly: "Is Secretary General Qian Zhuangfei in the camp headquarters?" I told him, "No."

Fan Jinbiao went on to say: "Vice Chairman Zhou instructed that if Secretary General Qian Zhuangfei is not in the headquarters of the camp, he will ask Commander Wang Zhitao to return to the Central Military Commission immediately."

I immediately followed Fan Jinbiao and returned to the cattle farm (long stream). Zhou Enlai was seen standing under a big tree, with a serious expression and a solemn look, talking with Li Fuchun, deputy director of the General Political Department; Deng Fa, deputy commander of the column of the Central Military Commission and director of the State Security Bureau; Fang Qiang, political commissar of the Central Military Commission Guard Regiment; Chen Geng, head of the cadre regiment; and Song Renqiang, political commissar of the cadre regiment.

After seeing me, he asked very anxiously, "Isn't Qian Zhuangfei with you?" After I answered, he asked again, "Was he with you yesterday?" I reported, "Yesterday we went together, and when we arrived at the cattle farm today, he went back to the General Administration."

Zhou Enlai told me that after the enemy planes bombed, they could not find Qian Zhuangfei. He ordered those present to immediately organize a troop search.

We searched for nearly three hours and found Qian Zhuangfei's body in a haystack in the southeast corner of the cattle farm. Hands and feet were tied, and breathing and heartbeat had long since stopped. Zhou Enlai stood for a long time in front of Qian Zhuangfei's body and shed tears.

He decided that the CMC column would change its marching plan and continue to camp in the cattle farm, and ordered the security bureau and the guard regiment to thoroughly investigate the case, and must arrest and punish the murderer to avenge Qian Zhuangfei. I had another assignment and did not participate in the work of solving cases and apprehending the murderers.

Later, Chen Geng told me that while hiding from the bombing of enemy planes, Comrade Qian Zhuangfei ran into a reactionary militia group in Guizhou and was brutally killed. The Central Military Commission Guard Regiment and the Cadre Regiment have captured all of this vigilante group and shot the leader of the vigilante group. (P162)
