A short lyric poem
Tears are a small piece of seawater that a person can make.
On the sea of the moonlit night, a piece of letter paper was put on it.
Illuminated by the light of the moon,
Will the stationery turn blue?
Something that people call fish,
It's all letter paper that someone put down.
Poetry is life, welcome to the "Caotang Reading Poetry" jointly launched by Cover News, Chengdu Radio and Television Station and Caotang Poetry Magazine, I am the reader juanzi. The poem you just heard is called "A Short Lyric Poem" from Shuji Terayama, translated by Peng Yongjian.
Shuji Terayama, known to many, is a famous Japanese film director who has made many impressive films. He is also a representative of Japan's avant-garde theater, has written lyrics for more than a hundred pop songs, and has even worked as a horse betting critic. In fact, Shuji Terayama also has an important identity, that is, he is a brilliant poet. He began publishing poems at the age of 13, organized a national student haiku conference at the age of 17, won the "Short Song Research" Newcomer Award at the age of 18, and was called the "Alchemist of Language", and today we come together to share the story of Shuji Terayama.
Shuji Terayama was born in 1935 in Aomori Prefecture, a cold place in northeastern Japan. His father, a former police officer, was conscripted into the army after the start of the Pacific War and died on Saipan on the eve of the war in 1945. His mother sent Terayama to different relatives during the war to maintain her family, and after the war, she followed the frequently changing US military bases to various counties. Therefore, the young Shuji Terayama almost never felt the love from blood relatives, but parasitically attached to different relatives and friends, as an outsider to the family life, and spent a lonely and melancholy juvenile period. He once said that he was like a captive horse, running his own piece of the world in stables far from the main house, lonely but free.
For Shuji Terayama, his youth unfolded on ruins and rubble, and even if he wanted to seek something new around him, he couldn't find what he was looking for. Under the intense loneliness and repression, poetry becomes an outlet for the release of thought. In middle school, Shuji Terayama began his career as a poet and published his works in the school newspaper. In addition to haiku and poetry, he has begun to write fairy tales. Terayama, who entered high school, even organized a haiku contest on campus and founded a poetry magazine. After graduating from high school, Shuji Terayama successfully entered the Faculty of Literature of Waseda University and broke into the poetry world of the time with an unconcealable talent. It can be said that his entire youth is closely intertwined with poetry.
Poetry was the earliest awakening of Shuji Terayama's creativity, after which he published nearly 10 poetry collections. This intimacy with language naturally continued into his theatrical and cinematic works. In many scripts, Terayama has skillfully added a large number of haiku and short songs. Moreover, he gives the poem a strong sense of form in the film, and the soundtrack also adds a rich aural atmosphere in the form of a song. It can be said that each of Shuji Terayama's films is permeated with a poetic temperament, and in his films, fantasy and misplaced reality intersect, and poetry, symbols and plots are intertwined. If you understand Shuji Terayama as a poet, you may be able to better understand the director and screenwriter Shuji Terayama.
