In the first year of Tang Yifeng (676 AD), Liuzu Huineng left Huaiji and Sihui, which had been hidden for fifteen or six years, and came to guangzhou Fasheng Temple (now Guangxiao Temple), where he encountered Master Yinzong's speech "Nirvana Sutra" and the wind blowing the Buddha flag fluttering, so people debated endlessly, some said it was "wind moving", some said "flag moving", seeing this situation, Liu zu Huineng said, "It is not wind movement, nor is it moving, it is people's hearts that are moving." This is the famous public case story of the "Debate Wind Banner" in the history of Zen Buddhism.

There are many records in the literature about the "debate on the wind flag" at the Guangxiao Temple, but from the records, it seems that there are several situations:

First, the Six Ancestors Huineng came to the Dharma Temple, met the Inzong Master teaching the Nirvana Sutra, and some monks argued endlessly about the "wind and flag movement", so the six ancestors Huineng stood up and said that it was not the wind, not the movement, but the heart. When the crowd heard it, they were stunned. As recorded in the Original Cao Xi and Zong Bao's Tantra Sutra: "At the Fa Sex Temple in Guangzhou, Master Yinzong taught the Nirvana Sutra. From time to time, the wind blows, and a monk cloud: 'The wind moves'. A monk cloud: 'Waving'. Talk a lot. Can enter: 'It is not the wind that moves, it is not the flag that moves, but the heart of the benevolent one.' The crowd was horrified. ”

Second, the six ancestors Huineng came to the Dharma Temple, met the Yin Sect Master to preach the Nirvana Sutra, the six ancestors Huineng lived in the monk's room, in the evening there was a wind blowing the Buddha flag, there were two monks arguing endlessly, so the six ancestors Huineng said to them, can I let this layman talk about my opinion, and then said, "It is not the wind that moves, it is not the heart that moves." Master Yinzong was very surprised to hear Huinengzhi's words, and the next day he invited Huineng to the room and asked about the truth of the wind banner, and the six ancestors Huineng told him the truth. As recorded in the Jingde Chuan Lantern Record and the Five Lantern Society: "In the South China Sea, Master Yuyinzong preached the Nirvana Sutra at the FaSheng Temple. The twilight wind raises the brake flag, smells the two monks' arguments, one cloud moves, one cloud moves, reciprocates and answers, and has not been reasoned. The Teacher: 'Is it possible to tolerate the pre-elevation theory of the vulgar flow?' Straight to the wind flag non-moving, moving from the heart and ears. Emperor Indochina whispered this, and he was surprised. Yi Ri invited the teacher into the room, the righteousness of the wind flag, and the teacher told the truth. ”

3. When Master Yinzong learned of Huineng's arrival, he went out to greet him and made arrangements for him. One day, Master Yinzong said that the Nirvana Sutra was blown by the wind, and Yinzong asked everyone whether it was wind moving or waving, and everyone debated endlessly, and finally asked Master Yinzong to judge, and Master Yinzong could not judge, so he asked Huineng, and Huineng said, "It is not the wind that moves, it is not the movement of people." As recorded in the "Zutang Collection": On the eighth day of the first month of the first year of Yifeng, the Nanhai County Zhizhi Temple met the Yinzong. Injong went out of the temple to greet him and returned to the temple to settle down. ...... One day, while preaching the scriptures, the wind and rain were violently moving, and when they saw their flags moving, the master asked the crowd, "Is the wind moving?" Hatabu also? "One cloud moves, one cloud moves, each competing with each other, just preach the Lord's proof." The preacher cannot judge, but asks the practitioner to judge. Walker Cloud: "It's not the wind, it's not the flag." Speaking of the main cloud: "What is the material movement?" Walker Cloud: "The benevolent one moves himself." ”

Fourth, The Indochina often asked his disciples to discuss the principles of the Dharma. It was the fifteenth Lantern Festival of the first month, so the Buddhist flag was hung (other days may not necessarily be hung), the people talked about the meaning of the wind flag at night (it was a collective discussion), and the Indzong master listened to them in the corridor. Four people expressed their opinions and argued endlessly, and Hui Neng said loudly that it was the hearts of the people. When Master Yinzong heard Huineng's words, and at the end of the next day's sermon, he asked the crowd who was the last speaker who was the last speaker to discuss the righteousness of the wind flag in the room last night, and who must have received the master's teachings. Some people said that it was Lu Huineng, the New State Walker, and Master Yinzong invited Huineng to the room. For example, the "Biography of Master Cao Xi" records: (Yinzong) Master each persuaded the disciples to discuss the doctrine. The fifteenth day of the first month is suspended. The people talk about righteousness at night. The mage listens under the next door. The first commentator: "The veil is merciless, moved by the wind." The second person is difficult to say: "The wind is ruthless, how to move?" Third person: "Cause and effect." The fourth man said, "The veil does not move, and the wind automatically hears." The crowd argued and made a lot of noise. Master Noh shouted to stop everyone: "The veil is not as moving as the rest of the species, and those who speak and move, the hearts of those who speak are automatically eared." Master Yinzong heard this, and when he finished speaking tomorrow, he asked the public, "Who was in the latter of the discourse in a certain room last night?" This man will be a good teacher." There was a roommate cloud: "It's NSW Lu Walker". Master Yun: "Please walk through the room." Can pass the room.
