Is the place where Liuzu Hui can take over the mantle is Huangmei Wuzu Temple or Dongchan Temple?

author:Wisdom Old Zen

Liu Zuhui was able to study the Fa with Master Wuzu Hongnin in Huangmei, Hubei Province, for more than eight months, during which he carried a stone to scoop rice, and finally relied on a Buddhist poem - Bodhi Ben No Tree, And Mingjing is not a platform. Originally there is nothing, where to stir up dust? - Be recognized by the Five Patriarchs, grant the mantle and dharma, and become the Six Patriarchs.

So, where did the Six Patriarchs Huineng receive the Dharma in Huangmei? It has always been said that it is Huangmei Wuzu Temple (also known as Dongshan Temple and Huangmei Temple). Therefore, there are many sites about the Six Ancestors in the Wuzu Temple today, such as the Six Ancestors Rice Ceremony, the Six Ancestral Halls, and so on. However, a review of historical documents shows that the place where The Six Patriarchs Hui was able to pull the mantle and the Dharma was the Huangmei Dongchan Temple instead of the Wuzu Temple.

I. The literature that the Six Patriarchs Hui was able to receive the mantle at the Huangmei Dongchan Temple

Shunzhi's "Huangmei County Chronicle" "Falling Waist Stone" says: "At the Dongchan Temple, the Six Ancestors fell from the waist to scoop rice". Qianlong's "Huangmei County Chronicle" "Dongchan Temple" said: "Outside the southwest city, for the six ancestors to receive the mantle, the temple has six ancestral halls, Wang Ke can be built, the five ancestral halls, Shi Kunyu built, later destroyed, Qianlong seventeen years of Yiren white elephant color reconstruction." The chronicle also contains Huang Litong's "New Tianji of Dongchan Temple" Yun: "Dongchan Temple is far from Meicheng City, and lingnan master Lu received the Dharma from Manchu, and it is said that the trough factory is also its land... For thousands of years, there has been a lack of books, and the brakes have been revived, and its details cannot be heard. At the beginning of the Shunzhi Dynasty, the natives had to fall into the ground, the fathers and elders gathered to look at it like a look, and The Caoxi Sect came from the hard work of the grains. The "Chronicle of Famous Places" records: "The Name of The Lotus Temple of Dongchan Temple is the mantle of the Five Ancestors at the Six Ancestors. There are six ancestral chaff ponds, falling waist stones and Wu Daozi chuanyi diagrams. The "Chronicle of Huangmei County", compiled after liberation, also says: (Dao) The five ancestors of the Five Ancestors hongnin, opened the Dharma at the Dongchan Temple. At that time, senior monks and Buddhists from all over the country came to visit inexplicably, and there were nearly a thousand disciples, including Huineng, a rice walker. In the winter of 661, Huineng was selected as the sixth generation of Dharma heirs according to the exception of Cai Cai, and became a figure in the history of Zen Buddhism.

All this shows that Huineng was selling rice and receiving mantle at the Huangmei Dongchan Temple instead of the Wuzu Temple.

Are Wuzu Temple and Tozenji Temple the same temple?

So, is Tozenji Temple the same temple as Gozu-ji Temple? Or is there a lineage between the two? It seems that there is none, because the Wuzu Temple is twenty-five miles northeast of the city, and the Dongchan Temple is in the southwest of the city, and the orientation and distance do not match.

Qianlong's "Huangmei County Chronicle" "Wuzu Temple" says: "In the northeast of the county twenty-five miles, the elder Feng Mao built a temple for the Great Manchu Zen Master with his mountain, so one Dongshan and one Feng Maoshan. Emperor Xuanzong of Tang built the Great Middle East Mountain Temple, also known as the Wuzu Temple. To the destruction of the Temple, the pagoda base was preserved, and the flesh of the Five Ancestors was transferred to the mountain to build the present temple. ”

So, can you still find the ruins of Tozen-ji Temple? Originally, now the Huangmei people used to call the Buddha Mother Temple as dongchan temple, and according to the county chronicle: "The buddha mother temple went to the east zen temple to count wu (not far), for the five ancestors of the adoptive mother hall, the mother was buried here, the stone pagoda still exists." On the occasion of the 1300th anniversary of the death of Liuzu Huineng, nanfang Daily planned and organized a special report on "re-walking the Liuzu Road", one of which made a special trip to Huangmei for field research, reading literature, interviewing cultural and historical workers, when the abbot of the Buddha Mother Temple, Master Dazhi, took reporters around the original site of the Dongchan Temple, the location of the temple is still called Dongchan Village, there is Buddha Mother Lane, Dazhi pointed to some houses and grasslands and told reporters that there were many temple foundations of Dongchan Temple. "Huangmei has a saying that 'ride a donkey to close the back door', and to ride a donkey to close the door, it can be seen that the temple was so big at that time. At that time, the Buddha Mother Temple was just outside the back door of the Tozen Temple, which made it convenient for the five ancestors to take care of their mother. Dazhi introduced that the Buddha Mother Temple still retains the Buddha Mother Pagoda that was rebuilt in the Yuan Dynasty, and the mother of the Five Ancestors is buried in the tower.

Third, the opinions of some local scholars in Huangmei

The reporter interviewed the local scholars to see what they had to say.

Zhou Maojie (first-class writer, Huang Mei mythological novelist):

I have seen the falling waist stone in Wuzu Temple since I was a child, but according to research, the falling waist stone is in the Dongchan Temple southwest of Huangmei City. According to this, Zhou Maojie tended to believe that when Huineng arrived in Huangmei, the five ancestors had not yet built a temple in Dongshan, but were practicing dharma in Dongchan.

Chen Feng (Director of Huangmei County Volunteer Office):

At present, many popular sources are introduced like this: Huangmei Wuzu Temple is the dojo of Hongnin, the fifth generation of Chinese Zen Buddhism, and it is also a holy place for the six ancestors to receive the Dharma and receive the mantle, and it is given the title of "Ancestral Court of the World". Interestingly, in the Qing Dynasty, Sanben County's chronicle detailed its history as a Wuzu Dojo in the entry "Wuzu Temple", but did not write a word about whether Huineng had obtained the Dharma here. On the contrary, under the entry "Dongchan Temple", it is clearly written: "Outside the southwest city, where the six ancestors are under the mantle, the temple has six ancestral halls, and Wang can be built." ”

Yang Tianyuan (President of Huangmei County Bajiaoting Poetry Society):

He was one of those who firmly believed that Huineng had attained dharma at Dongchan Temple, and found many circumstantial evidence, one of which was the same as that of Zhou Mao Street, that is, the land where the falling waist stone came out. "The Dongchan Temple is located from Meicheng City, and the Lingnan Master Lu received the Dharma from the Manchus, and it is said that the trough factory and its land are also ... At the beginning of the Shunzhi Dynasty, the natives had to fall into the ground, and the fathers and elders gathered to look at it like a blockage, which was called Caoxi Yizong, which actually came from the hard work of the grains, and relied on the spirits of the Buddhas to protect it, and the old things were obvious..." This is the account in Qianlong's fifty-four years of "Huangmei County Chronicle". He said: When the Tang Dynasty painted Saint Wu Daozi passing through Huangmei, he once painted a "picture of passing clothes" for the Dongchan Temple, and in the early years of the Southern Song Dynasty, the poet Wang Daozhi paraded Huangmei and saw it: "Only Yu fell from the waist stone, and the rope was worn empty." Tangtang Wusheng painting, the brushwork of the world is wise. Although the silk is decaying, Danqing is still there. Wang Zhidao wrote two poems, "Huangmei Dongchan Temple" and "Wuzu Mountain", which depicted two Wuzu dojos respectively, proving that Dongshan Temple and Dongchan Temple are not one temple and two names, and further explaining that Dongchan Temple is the land of the Six Ancestors.

Therefore, many local researchers in Huangmei believe that Hongnin only went to Feng Maoshan in 672 AD after choosing the Fa Si, that is, Dongshan, and first built the Fayu Temple, later known as the Wuzu Temple, which has become the center of Huangmei Buddhism since the Tang Dynasty.

In short, judging from the literature and people's research results, there is a certain reason why liuzuhui can take over the mantle and Buddhism at The Huangmei Dongchan Temple instead of the Wuzu Temple, which is worth thinking about.
