Six Ancestors Refuge Stone

After the Six Ancestors Huineng Huangmei received the Fa and returned south to Qujiang, Cao Hou villager Cao Shuliang and others rebuilt the Baolin Temple, asked Huineng to live, and then there were evildoers looking for difficulties, because Huineng foresaw, first hidden in the rock crevices a few miles away from the Baolin Temple, although the evildoers set fire to it and were spared, because of the name of "Refuge Stone". But this six ancestral wisdom can shelter the stone, do you believe that it really existed in history? If so, where is it?

I. Documentary records about the Six Ancestors Huineng Refuge Stone

The name "Refuge Stone" was first found in the Caoxi Original (Qi Song Ben) "Altar Sutra", which records:

The teacher went from Huang Mei to the village of Caohou in Shaozhou... There were Cao Shuliang, the grandson of marquis of Jinwu, and the residents competed to pay tribute. Shi Baolin Ancient Temple has been abandoned since the end of the Sui Dynasty, so it was rebuilt in the old base of The Fanyu, extended the monk's residence, and became a treasure house. The division stayed for more than nine months, and then searched for the evil party, and the division fled to the front mountain. He set fire to the grass and trees, and the master was invisibly thrown into the stone to avoid it. The stone then has the pattern of the master sitting on the knee and the cloth of the cloth, because of the name of the refuge stone, the master recalls the instructions of the five ancestors to stop hiding, so he hides in Eryi.

Zongbao's "TanJing" basically inherits the theory of Cao Xi's original "Tanjing". By the time Ma Yuan and Shi Zhenpu of the Qing Dynasty rebuilt the Caoxi Tongzhi, there was a special eye for the "Refuge Stone":

In the southern five miles of the temple, three stone products are listed, of which the only giant. In September, Shiju Baolin suddenly moved his heart, foresaw that the evil party was seeking harm, and fled to qianshan. When the evil party was successful, he set fire to the grass and trees, and the master was invisibly thrown into the stone to avoid it. The stone is red and purple, two or three feet deep, like a niche. The old Jingyun now has the pattern of the teacher sitting on the knee and the cloth, hence the name.

The Article of the Chronicle of the Six Patriarchs also says:

Cao Xi resident Cao Shuliang and others rebuilt Baolin Temple, and Yan Shi lived in it. On the remaining days of the ninth month, he was again chased by the evil people, and Shi Nai fled to the front mountain, where he set fire to the grass and trees, and Shi was invisibly thrown into the stone to be spared.

The "Shaozhou Fuzhi" compiled between Jiajing in the Ming Dynasty records that at Nanhua Temple, there were "twelve scenes of descending dragon pagoda, Fuhu Pavilion, Zhuo Xiquan, Refuge Stone, and Caoxi Water." When king Pingnan rebuilt Nanhua Temple in the fifth year of the Qing Kangxi Dynasty, "the temple had the Descending Dragon Pagoda, Fuhu Pavilion, Feixi Bridge, Zhaoyin Rock, Zhuo Xiquan, Baishi, Sitting Stone, Waist Stone, Refuge Stone, Flower and Fruit Courtyard, and Xuetao Spring." In other words, until the Qing Dynasty, there were "refuge stones" attractions.

However, regarding this experience of the Six Ancestors Huineng, the Zutang Collection, the Jingde Chuan Lantern Record, the Five Lantern Huiyuan, the Chuanfa Zhengzong Records, the Song High Monk Biography, and the Six Ancestral Masters Origins and Other Zen texts are not recorded, while the various editions of the Tantra, Dunhuang Ben has no records, Hui Xin Ben only said that "Hui Neng went to Caoxi after hui Neng, and was taken refuge in Huixian County", and did not see the name of "refuge stone".

Therefore, the author feels that the legendary color of the Six Ancestral Refuge Stones is obviously higher than the truth of the facts.

Where are the Six Ancestors Huineng Refuge Stone located?

The Tantra only records the reason for the name of the "Refuge Stone", but does not say where the stone is. The "Caoxi Tongzhi" only says that this stone is in the "five miles south of the temple", and the specific location still has no real reference. And the zhi has "Hidden Rock" article cloud:

In the west ten miles of the temple, there are huge stones, more than ten meters high, and half of them have rocks. "Chronicle of the County": "Zen masters often live here in seclusion. "The post-monk is the Iwachu Master. The parents mentioned that the word "ZhaoYin" in the great book of Geng Zhongnan was engraved in stone, and the supervision of Zhou Gong had a poem.

So, is the Hidden Rock a "Refuge Stone"? The "Qujiang County Cultural Relics Chronicle" said: "Zhaoyin Rock is located in Lion Rock Lion Tail Mountain, 2.5 kilometers southwest of Maba Town. Legend has it that the Zen master Huineng Dajian of the Tang Dynasty returned from Huangmei to The South, and because he was hunted down and killed by evil monks, he once hid in this rock. Later generations built a temple on this rock called 'Zhaoyin Temple', which is one of the twenty-four scenic spots in Qujiang, 'Lion Rock Zhaoyin'. Qing Guangxu's "Chronicle of Qujiang County" says: "Zhaoyin Rock, forty miles south of the city, Tang Xinzhou Lu Jushi often hid here. Mention the punishment of Geng Zhongnan's book Zhao Yin two words Le Yu Shi, editing Cheng Wende has a title'. The word has peeled off and is gone. There is a stone in the upper right of the rock, the whole body is sleek, shaped like a stone chair, and the word 'Zen stone' is engraved on the 'backrest', the word size varies, about 8 cm square, and it belongs to the book body. ”

However, the author checked the "Danxia Mountain Jinshiyan Temple Chronicle" attached to the "Zhaoyin Lu Gongju Shi Lingshi" inscription, which records that Yun:

The one who recruited the hidden rock, there was a white-clothed resident in the Song Renzong Dynasty Jiayou, who came from Xinzhou and was also the head of the Six Patriarchs of South China. After practicing in Yuzi, on the third day of March, he became a Buddha and sat down, and the villagers did not know, so they burned it with fire, and did not transform it for three days, and the layman's flesh was as it was. Prayer: "If there is a spirit, rain will fall in heaven." "The prayer is not endless, the clouds are cloudy, that is, it falls in the rain □□ into the thousand □ to worship, but the rock □ Li □ Gu □□□ the southern peak, and the age gives the lamp oil □□ and the Taoist to worship. Chongning three years of this Dao to punish Geng Gong Nanzhong □ moon □ day to feel the spirit dream, the next morning landed on the rock to see the beauty of the □, so he ordered to "beckon", sneaked into the stone room□□ Shuqu Jiangzhi County Li Gong was discussed to pray for the drought to feel the spirit dream, prayed for the rock, rain for days and □□ number□ the god □ can respond to the heavens to protect the country, the lower neng Su □□ □□□□□ in the □□, the army of thieves all looked up, the □ of the torch □, the bones of the residents are still the same. In the first year of Yanyou, the Benlu Government sentenced Zhang Gongcheng to □ the main alliance to be built, Yanyu Yixin, and the Renshan residents divided the relics in this □ Pagoda Geng Gong left the inscription.

The Lu Jushi mentioned in the inscription is a member of Huineng Xinzhou, not Huineng himself, so from this point of view, Zhao Yinyan has nothing to do with Huineng.

Zhaoyin Rock is located in the lion rock in the ruins of the Maba people in the present-day Qujiang River, and from the topography, it is similar to the "three stone columns, of which the only giant", and was also a place where the six ancestors Hui could hide from the evil people. The author personally inspected that the stone inside the rock was indeed "shaped like a stone chair", and the word "Zen stone" engraved was still faintly recognizable. However, the Zhao Yin Rock is in the "Ten Miles West of the Temple", and the Refuge Stone is "in the South Five Mile of the Temple", the two are not in harmony with each other, and the distance is far, and it is not compatible with huineng when he is hunted down and killed, "it is hidden in the front mountain", so the Zhao Yin Rock cannot be surely the refuge stone.

Mr. Zhu Derui, both of his books "Singing of the Buddha in Caoxi" and "The Story of Liuzu Huineng", both claim to have found the "Six Ancestors Refuge Stone" on Dawang Mountain, but Mr. Zhu's so-called "Refuge Stone" found has no documentary support, nor has he carefully demonstrated the "discovery", which needs to be further proved.
