Dublin: My long day with the city

Dublin, which feels like a cup of coffee to me, is a tone of the city, but it's also true to the coffee: the rich sweetness has a hint of bitterness, and there are too many profound things here.

Strictly speaking, there was only "one day and one night" in Dublin, but like the "long day" written in Ulysses, the day seen is more complicated than some places that have been stayed for a long time.

I haven't read Ulysses (maybe I'll read it in the future), but I still know the general synopsis, the "adventures" of an ordinary Dublin citizen in the "Long Day" of June 16, and I also know that there are many place names in this novel that can still be found in Dublin today. At least on my first night in Dublin, yes, I guess it should be 23pm? The first place you arrive from the train station is the Customs House, which appears in the novel.

I like the name of the youth hostel where I lived in Dublin, Time Hostel, time always gives people a very precious feeling, at least from elementary school to those proverbs and famous quotes, but in Dublin, this thing seems to become less important, because here, my previous concept of time has disappeared, and sometimes I always feel that it will take half an hour to get from one attraction to another, but I didn't expect that in the end it only took 5 minutes. Here, a day is really going to be "long".

The streets of Dublin at night are serene and intoxicating

10 a.m. -

I think I was affected by the "lazy" work and rest time of Europeans, since I don't have to go to school or work, what do I do when I go out and play so early? So it's no surprise that I picked up such a time and went out again, and I even thought I could get up later, because there were still a lot of people in the same room who were still lying in bed when I left the room (of course, mostly because I got drunk in the bar the day before.

The hostel where I live is just opposite Trinity College, so this university has naturally become my first destination, but this is also the place that disappoints me the most, of course, the reason is in myself, who wants me to come during the winter vacation, the old library and the Kells Sutra that are the most worth visiting in the college are not open for visit, and "the house leaks even rainy", which is half exaggerated and half true: the house is not leaking, but the rain is there.

Fortunately, Grafton Street near the college is quite good, and the local Chinese like to call it "Widow Street", which is indeed quite similar in transliteration. This is probably the most commercial place in Dublin, but there are still many small shops with a lot of personality, and there are many street performers singing on this street, and I have to admire that they can still be so persistent when it rains in winter mornings. One of them sang really well, and at that time he wanted to buy a CD that he poured himself, but he didn't know that he had been told that he had been robbed, and it seemed that he had "a little fame".

I don't remember how I got through Widows Street to St. Stephens Park, as if that was the end of the street? In fact, St. Stephens Park does not have much to see, very quiet but brings a hint of decadence, this time the rain is less, there are not too many people in the park, a few swans with a few ducks wandering in the lake, and a bird that I don't know what to call. Of course, I didn't stay in this park for long, and I didn't seem to be in the center of the park, but I wasn't interested in it, so I didn't have to spend too much time in this park, just visit here, and of course I knew not to carve "visit here" on a tree in the park, although I saw tourists from a certain country (at least not in Asia) doing it at the time.

St. Stephens Park

Not far west from St. Stephens Park is St. Patrick's Church, as if the church in Ireland is as west as Westminster's church in London, burying many Irish celebrities. There is a large square in front of St. Patrick's Church, and the church feels quite harmonious, and in the corner of the square there is a wall of celebrities, which depicts famous writers in Irish history, Irish literature has a very high status in the world, at least now the literary artists who can say names include Jonas, Shaw, Becket, Swift, and in literature, in addition to "Ulysses", there are also "Waiting for Godot" and "Gulliver's Travels", at least the last two I have read.

Noon --

I don't feel hungry at all, my travels are always like this, the previous standard diet and schedule will always be completely disrupted, if you are not hungry, go ahead. At this time I arrived at Dublin Castle, this name sounds really majestic, but walking in and looking at it feels "but so", the style is needless to say, otherwise it can't be called the name of the castle, and this castle is indeed architecturally magnificent enough to be called a "small town". It is only because of the similar style of the Pena Palace in Sintra, Portugal, that Dublin Castle is still somewhat compared.

What impressed me the most in this castle was the large garden at the back, which can be said to contain a little bit of All Styles of European Gardens, such as the labyrinth of fences, the small fountains hidden in various corners, and of course, a large square in the center of the garden that contains what appears to be a totem.

I don't know how long I was around, but I unconsciously arrived at another attraction , the Church of the Holy Trinity ( which I prefer to call , in fact , more people call it " Protestant Cathedral " ) , and when I came to this church , I was really lucky , when the rain stopped , the sky just cleared , so a rainbow appeared in the sky , and this rainbow just crossed the roof of the entire church, like the classic symbol of Disney!

"Catch up" some attractions, you can be a little "lost", this time choose to get lost in the free zone of Dublin, the name "free zone" is really ironic, in fact, the people living here should not be very "free", many of the people living in this area are some low-level people, such as the workers of the nearby Guinness Black Brewery, or simply some unemployed homeless people who have nothing to do all day. But it is also here that I saw a relatively primitive Dublin, in fact, many of today's Dublin were only transformed in the 90s of the last century, and before that, the whole of Dublin gave people more of a witty and even decadent feeling: there were many unemployed people, life pressure was huge, and the Dublin citizens of that year also became helpless and anxious because of this rhythm of life.

Speaking of this, in fact, I also saw it in the novel, and what I want to talk about here is Tana Frankie's novel "Take Me Back", which is actually a suspense novel, but the whole story is aimed at Dublin, especially the city life in this free zone. Trivial, gray, disillusioned, these are several representative styles of Irish literature, sometimes just a simple little story, or even no possible ending, but just because this happened in Ireland, in Dublin, this story is also more profound.

At this time most people go to visit the Guinness Distillery, but I am not interested in this, continue to the west, walk to the edge of the city, from the Heuston railway station through the River Liffey, opposite is known as "Europe's largest urban park" - Phoenix Park, this point is usually the hottest place, winter should be said to be the warmest time, in the winter warm sun background, the whole park has a kind of beauty that is usually estimated to be invisible. This was also the first time I had actually sat down and enjoyed it after four hours of walking.

Phoenix Park

In the case of the complete absence of the concept of time, I don't remember what time I left Phoenix Park, only that it was a little dark at that time, so I began to walk back along the River Liffey, which is the "Mother River" of Dublin, and the whole of Dublin should be said to be along this river. On this river also crossed a variety of bridges, there is a classical feeling, there is also a sense of modernity, the most impressive bridge is a white modern bridge, this bridge was made into the shape of a harp, to know that the harp is actually the national emblem of Ireland, you can see how important this instrument is, and the name of the bridge is named after the Irish writer Beckett.

Before it gets dark, I finally came to O'Connell Street, where most tourists start their day trips to Dublin, and the most notable thing on this street is a "big pillar" that rises into the sky, which is a landmark of Dublin. However, there are many notable people on the side of this large pillar, such as many statues of characters in front of and behind the big pillar, these characters I honestly do not know, but those movements impressed me, I heard that the people in these statues were important people who contributed to the establishment of the Republic of Ireland.

After a day of violent walking, he returned to the bed of the hostel to make up for a sleep, and only went out again at ten o'clock in the evening. As for this time, all you have to do is look at the nightlife of the Irish. The most famous of this area is the Temple Bar area, surrounded by bars, and at night, the whole area of various bars have the classic Irish "pub song", which is the nightlife of the Irish, not like Spain, more of an appreciation, music, beer "appreciation", as for what song is played, I think people who have watched the 2012 Euro 2012 Irish vs Spain game will have an impression.

And Irish wine, the most famous is Guinness stout, this beer is not very strong, quite suitable for use as a pastime, and I usually drink Spanish beer and other European beers are completely different, not only in color. But what I remember more in comparison is "Irish coffee", this "coffee" is really deceptive, because it is actually a kind of whiskey, many people introduce it to say that whiskey seasoning is added to the coffee, but after I drank it, I found that it was not the case at all, but more like pouring some coffee in the whiskey, and it was sugar-free.

With the Irish coffee in my hand, I felt a little drunk, and as time went on, I seemed to be about to sleep on the bar counter, the only constant was the Irish folk songs that kept echoing in my ears, and the few fans who were watching English football.
