During the Great Revolution of 1924-1927, the Communist Party of China cooperated with the Kuomintang of China to form a revolutionary united front. In 1929, Yang Zaian returned to Shanghai and remained in the Party Central Committee and participated in the publication of party newspapers and periodicals. In Shanghai, where the White Terror was extremely severe, the Party's funding was very difficult. Yang Zai'an's family has a large population and an extremely difficult life, two of the seven children died of illness and lack of medical treatment, he himself suffered from lung disease, and his wife was not in good health. In the summer of 1931, Luo Qiyuan, head of the Propaganda Department of the CPC Central Committee, was informed by traitors because of his life style, and 16 people, including Yang Zai'an, were arrested. Because Yang Zai'an had served as a member of the Central Committee Standing Committee within the Kuomintang and had a relatively large influence, Chiang Kai-shek sent people several times to persuade him to surrender, but he severely reprimanded him. The enemy threatened with death, and Yang Zai'an replied categorically: "Since I joined the revolution, I have long put my life and death on the line. ”
Soon, Yang Zaian was escorted to the Longhua Detention Center of the Songhu Police Headquarters. He entrusted someone to bring out a letter to his family, saying that he would inevitably sacrifice for the revolution, and warned his family not to accept any financial support from anyone he did not know, and if he really could not live, he would go back to his hometown.
In August 1931, Yang Zaian was secretly shot by the Nationalist reactionaries in the wasteland inside the Songhu Garrison Headquarters at the age of 35.
