Lintong pomegranate can be described as "the royal fruit of the Silk Road". Beginning in 138 BC, Zhang Qian went to the Western Regions to open up the Silk Road, introduced pomegranates to be planted in the Hanshang Linyuan and Huaqing Palace, and later transplanted to all parts of the country. Since then, pomegranates have become a unique label and symbol of Lintong. In 2020, the Shaanxi Lintong pomegranate planting system was included in the fifth batch of China's important cultural heritage. The core protected area of the heritage site is located in four administrative villages west of the Qin Terracotta Warriors and Horses Museum, covering an area of 15,000 mu.
Lintong pomegranate is known for its bright color, thin skin, juicy and sweet taste, soft and delicious core, less seed fat residue, and excellent quality, and has always been a royal tribute. At present, there are more than 10,000 pomegranate trees in Lintong District that are more than 50 years old, and 712 pomegranate trees that are more than 100 years old, including 19 ancient pomegranate tree groups. Over the years, in addition to increasing pomegranate planting, Lintong District has also continued to strengthen its support for the pomegranate industry, and multiple measures have made the pomegranate industry in Lintong flourish and thrive. At present, Lintong pomegranate planting area of more than 80,000 acres, the existing high-standard high-quality pomegranate demonstration garden 15, the area has pomegranate wine, pomegranate beverage processing enterprises 5, the annual processing of fresh fruit 20,000 tons. More than 30 enterprises and professional cooperatives engaged in the production and sales of pomegranates have cultivated processed products such as Dan ruoer, Qin figurines, red pomegranates, 15 well-known brands of fresh fruits such as Bai fu rui, Lin Tong, Linlu and Linyan, and the annual output value of the pomegranate industry has reached more than 500 million yuan. In 2017, it was registered and protected by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs as a geographical indication of agricultural products.
