It is said that during the Spring and Autumn Period, Gongzi Guang (later King Lu of Wu) wanted to kill King Wu and establish himself as king. Gongzi Guang knew that King Wu liked to eat fish, so he wanted to take advantage of this weakness of his to assassinate him. He first drew the pattern of the meat on the back of the fish and fried it in oil, so that the fish meat swelled up, and it sprinkled condiments on it, and the shape became swollen and could not see that there was a dagger hidden inside, so Gongzi Guang stabbed his hand and established himself as king, and later Gongzi Guang often ordered the chef to make this dish. Once, when serving a dish, the bystander asked Gongzi Guang that this dish did not look like a squirrel, so the dish was called open.
