Speech at the "Tsinghua International Art and Design Education Conference"

Dear Presidents and Colleagues,

I am delighted to attend the 2021 Tsinghua International Art and Design Education Conference and to meet you at the International Art and Design Presidents Forum. Although the global covid-19 epidemic has brought severe challenges to mankind, we still believe that art is the fire that arouses people's enthusiasm for life and gives people spiritual yearning, and design is an important force to solve various problems of real survival and development, including coping with various social crises, so we must discuss the new issues facing global art and design with an open attitude, and construct a new pattern of art and design for the future with transcendent thinking, as art educators. We must establish a new model for talent training in a cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural manner. The organizers of the forum put forward the theme of "Asking Questions of a Diverse World", which is forward-looking.

Entering a new era, China's social development provides a new opportunity for the development of Chinese art and design, from urban planning and architecture to rural construction, from industrial manufacturing to intelligent technology, from the creation of public environmental beauty to people's demand for aesthetic culture, all of which require art and design to play an enabling role, so that imaginative thinking and innovative expression can help activate the innovation ability of the whole society. In my opinion, the premise of "asking questions about a diverse world" is that in the face of a diverse world, we must have a macro vision, a connecting thinking, and a toolbox for solving problems, that is, a methodology, especially to grasp the new trends in global art and design in concept and practice.

For Chinese art and design, there are at least two issues that need to be addressed urgently. The first is how to grasp the conditions of the times of cross-border and integration, transcend the existing disciplinary boundaries in art and design, make the field of art and design move towards new social and cultural needs, integrate new scientific and technological achievements and means in art and design innovation, free from traditional functionalism, and move towards a new materialism of interdisciplinary integration, humanistic care, and ecological integration of man and nature. As a kind of intangible production, the images, creativity, knowledge, methods, and cooperation and exchange of art and design create not only the necessities of social life, but also social life itself, so that art and design can play a role in ideological precursors and emotional lubrication in a dynamic social change. The second is to solve the problem of contemporary transformation of traditional resources. Each country and nation has its own rich cultural traditions and cultural genes. The artistic concepts, feelings and ways of expressing nature accumulated in Chinese history are self-contained, and they also have unique connotations about nature, matter and form in the way called "creation", such as the construction of The French style in architecture, the respect for natural attributes in the craft medium, and the craftsmanship spirit in handicraft. These material and intangible heritages are permeated with Chinese aesthetics and the values of material use, and now they need to be transformed and innovatively developed, which is also an important way to avoid the homogenization of global art and design.

The Central Academy of Fine Arts, where I work, has been committed to the reform of teaching in recent years, and the important purpose of this is to make the curriculum themes, teaching content and methods based on China and facing the world, adhere to the pace of the times, take innovation as the engine, and build a cross-open discipline layout and structure. Professor Song Xiewei, Dean of the School of Design of our university, and his colleagues put forward a discipline construction plan that highlights cross-integration, focusing on six aspects: strategic design, scientific and technological design, cultural design, social design, industrial design, and design research, forming a new development pattern of inward integration and outward intersection of design disciplines. In this regard, the Central Academy of Fine Arts has established close cooperation with well-known art and design institutions at home and abroad, and here, I would like to thank all the heads of colleges and universities for their strong support. The educational thinking, school philosophy, understanding of the nature of the discipline, and judgment of the world trend of a college president are often the core elements of the soul of a school. In the field of art and design, different colleges and universities have different cultural and artistic climates, and the collision of views among college directors will reflect the most cutting-edge thinking of global art design, and explore the architectural model of future international art and design education from the perspective of the top level in the new era. This Forum of College Directors will examine art and design education from a global perspective, seek sustainable interaction and development between different cultures, explore the special role and significance of art and design education innovation in the new era, and will create a far-reaching cross-border and interdisciplinary exchange platform for academic institutions from different backgrounds.

Following the Forum of Heads of Colleges, the International Symposium on Art and Design Education will be held on October 30, 2021 at eight venues at the Academy of Fine Arts of Tsinghua University. The seminar invited more than 60 well-known professors and scholars from many of the world's top art and design colleges to combine online and offline, breaking the boundaries of time and space, in line with the theme of "asking questions to a diverse world", raising eight important questions in the field of art and design education, sharing their different views, and exploring the answers to the problems together in the collision of ideas.

Qiu Zhijie, Dean of the School of Experimental Art of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Song Xiewei, Dean of the School of Design, Zhang Xinrong, Vice Dean of the School of Design, Fei Jun, Professor of the School of Design, and Cui Donghui, Vice Dean of the School of Architecture, will attend the International Art and Design Education Academic Seminar and deliver speeches.
