Professor Li Shiwei of HKUST (Guangzhou) (preparing) won the Top Academic Organisation Award in Mechanical Engineering

Nandu News Reporter Dong Xiaoyan Correspondent Lu Mengzhou The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) (hereinafter referred to as "HKUST (Guangzhou)") once again spread the good news. On October 28, ASME, a top international academic organization in the field of mechanical engineering, announced that it has awarded the 2021 Avram Bar-Cohen Memorial Award, the organization's most important honorary award in the field of electronic packaging, to Professor Li Shiwei, Acting Dean of the System Hub of HKUST (Guangzhou). Professor Li Shiwei is also the first Chinese scientist to receive this award.

Internationally recognized for his academic achievements and leadership

Founded in 1880, ASME (The American Society of Mechanical Engineers) is the world's top and most influential academic organization in the field of mechanical engineering, with more than 90,000 members in 135 countries around the world.

The honors awarded this time recognize the most outstanding professionals in the field of electronic packaging and related fields, and the standard is extremely high: both the winner is required to have excellent academic achievements, but also to have outstanding leadership, which has a profound impact in the academic community and the industry. Since its inception in 1999, the award has been awarded every one to two years, and to date there have been only 12 winners.

The nominee introduced this year's grand prize winner, Professor Lee Sai Wai.

It is reported that Professor Li Shiwei received a doctorate degree in aerospace engineering from Purdue University in 1992 and joined the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 1993, which has been 28 years. He is a leading scholar in the field of international electronic packaging, especially in the reliability analysis and introduction of lead-free solder joints, wafer-level packaging and LED packaging technology and applications.

In the field of microelectronic packaging, the interconnection between different levels needs to be achieved through solder joints. Although the traditional tin-lead solder is inexpensive and has good performance, it is harmful to the natural environment and the human body, so the industry has been upgrading the technology of lead-free solder joints since around 2006. Professor Li Shiwei has overcome the technical problems in the reliability of solder joints and greatly promoted the technological transformation of lead-free solder joint applications.

In the field of LED packaging, Professor Li Shiwei and his team have successfully realized the use of LEDs into mass transportation systems for lighting purposes. The Hong Kong Metro has adopted this research result and has become an excellent case recognized by the world. During the COVID-19 epidemic, Professor Li Shiwei and his team realized the application of deep ultraviolet LEDs in disinfection and sterilization, and made new explorations in the field of public health.

At the same time, Professor Li Shiwei has served as the editor-in-chief of the IEEE Journal of Component Packaging Technology, the international president of the IEEE CPMT Society, and the international president of the ASME EPPD Society; IEEE and ASME are two university conferences of international authority. Professor Li Shiwei is the only scholar who has served as the president of both universities and the editor-in-chief of two major journals in the field of electronic packaging.

"We are not the 'rich second generation', so we have to redouble our efforts"

Professor Li Shiwei believes that in order to gain international recognition, Chinese scientists must redouble their efforts.

"For more than 100 years, it is undeniable that the center of global science has been in the West, mainly in the United States and Europe. Therefore, the achievements of Western scientists are more easily seen and recognized, and they have a greater right to speak. Professor Li Shiwei said. In the case of the two major academic organizations of IEEE and ASME, the vast majority of those who have held important positions are Western scientists or immigrant scholars who have taken root in the West.

"For example, people are 'born rich second generation'. For scholars outside Europe and the United States, they must redouble their efforts and achieve international leading achievements in order to be recognized. Li Shiwei was a doctor of aerospace engineering, but due to the industrial environment and in order to meet the needs of the Hong Kong industry for microelectronics research and development at that time, li Shiwei "changed halfway" into the field of microelectronics. "I graduated with a phD and came to the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology after completing one year of postdoctoral training. At that time, HKUST had just been established, everything started from scratch, and the foundation could not be compared with the famous Western universities, but the academic environment was very relaxed and free, so that scholars could give full play. ”

Since then, Professor Li Shiwei has carried out extensive and in-depth cooperation with leading enterprises in the industry around the world, especially in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, to jointly overcome technical problems and promote the transformation of achievements. Since 2002, Professor Li Shiwei has cooperated with Huawei, ZTE and other enterprises, and has continued to conduct systematic training for mainland electronic packaging enterprises to promote the high-level development of the industry.

Today, Professor Lee Sai Wai is the Acting Dean of HKUST Guangzhou System Hub, and he hopes to call on more outstanding young scholars to join HKUST Guangzhou and encourage them to go global with their own experiences.

"The new faculty we are recruiting now are all from leading international universities, they understand the rules of international academia, and the starting point is very high. This is their advantage over our generation. Li Shiwei said: "More importantly, I hope that they will bring back an international vision, broaden their vision, do not set limits on themselves, and do a solid job in scientific research." ”

Professor Li Shiwei especially encouraged young scholars to strive for more voice in the international academic community. "Don't just worry about doing research, go out, tell others, and make an impact." I hope that they will actively participate in international academic activities and actively compete for important positions in international academic organizations. ”

System hub: widely establish industry partners and innovate education mechanisms

Under the leadership of Prof Lee Sai Wai, the preparation of the HKUST (Guangzhou) System Hub is progressing smoothly.

It is understood that the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Guangzhou Metro Group Co., Ltd. have signed a joint training agreement for intelligent transportation talents, and the two sides will jointly guide graduate students and provide them with internships and scientific research opportunities. Li Shiwei said that the system hub will carry out more cooperation with the industry in talent training and transformation of scientific research achievements. For example, it will discuss with China Southern Airlines and plan to cooperate in the direction of intelligent transportation, robotics and autonomous systems. In the field of life sciences and biomedicine, the system hub is also in contact with high-level hospitals in Guangzhou to investigate the possibility of cooperation.

At the same time, the system hub actively innovates the education mechanism. At present, the core curriculum of the hub has been successfully carried out, and "Model-Based Systems Engineering" has fully implemented the active learning model, teaching in small groups.

"All the students are divided into different houses, just like in Harry Potter, where each student chooses a college. Each House has a House Head, House Secretary, and House Speaker, and each member takes turns serving as a Spooner. In this way, it mobilizes the initiative and enthusiasm of all people, and stimulates the spirit of teamwork and honor. At the end of the course, each House is assessed in the form of a presentation, and the system hub awards medals to outstanding reporters.

"We sincerely hope that more outstanding talents will join the system hub and carry out integrated discipline research and learning at HKUST (Guangzhou)." Li Shiwei introduced that according to the plan, by the beginning of the school year next September, there will be nearly 40 professors in the system hub, and we are currently actively recruiting high-level teachers around the world.
