More than 100 years ago, China was in the Republic of China period, weak in national strength and bullied by foreign powers. In this era of turbulence and the alternation of the old and the new, many cultural elites have been bred, and some of them are sought after as masters by the world. These masters of the Republic of China stepped into the new world with one foot, and the other foot was still in the old world, and although they had made great achievements in learning, their private lives were mostly chaotic, which seemed to be a unique mark of that era, and the world was not surprised.
This article takes Hu Shi, Gu Hongming, and Huang Kan as examples to talk about how chaotic the private lives of these Republic of China masters were.

Hu Shi: The red flag at home does not fall, and the bunting flag flutters outside

In the spring of 1904, Hu Shi accompanied his half-brother Hu Zhenzhi to Shanghai to study, and before leaving, his mother Feng Shundi was engaged to him, and the woman was Jiang Dongxiu, a Miss Qianjin of the Jiang family in Jingde County, Anhui. Hu Shi did not accept this family affair in his heart, but as a filial son, he was forced by his mother's pressure to return to his hometown on December 30, 1917 to complete the marriage.
Hu Shi studied in the United States in 1910, and as early as 1914, he fell in love with Wei Liansi, the daughter of a geology professor at Cornell University, who was four years older than him, and this relationship lasted for more than 2 years. However, what Wei Liansi did not know was that during the time when Hu Shi was in love with her, he also frantically pursued a Chinese female student, Chen Hengzhe, and quickly captured the female student.
Hu Shi returned to his hometown in 1917 to marry Jiang Dongxiu, Wei Liansi and Chen Hengzhe were momentarily dumbfounded, Chen Hengzhe tried to adjust his mentality, just in 1920 married, the next year gave birth to children, after returning to China to become a professor at Peking University. Wei Liansi, on the other hand, was much more miserable, and even waited for Hu Shi in the fantasy for a lifetime, never married.
In 1917, Hu Shi returned to his hometown to complete the marriage, and at the wedding there was a bridesmaid named Cao Chengying, who was Hu Shi's hometown and his distant relative. Cao Chengying had an unhappy marriage and came to Hangzhou from his hometown after the divorce, and at this time, Hu Shi also came to Hangzhou. Cao Chengying, a girl who has not been deeply involved in the world, finally saw the idol she had admired for a long time, and Hu Shi quickly took down Cao Chengying.
Hu Shi originally wanted to divorce Jiang Dongxiu, but Jiang Dongxiu was fierce, Hu Shi lost the battle, had to break up with Cao Chengying, and Cao Chengying could only run to beat the fetus herself, but after that, she was still not dead to Hu Shi, and waited until Hu Shi went to the United States to be the ambassador to the United States and lost contact with her, she even almost became discouraged and became a nun.
In 1935, the 44-year-old Hu Shi had already become famous all over the world, and he had a crush on a female student Xu Fang, who was 21 years younger than himself. As soon as Xu Fang was admitted to Peking University, she was favored by Hu Shi, and the 23-year-old Xu Fang admired Hu Shi, and Hu Shi did not hesitate to take advantage of the opportunity to take it. After playing for a year, Hu Shi got tired of it, found a reason to send Xu Fang away and completely cut off contact with her. Xu Fang was sad for a few years and married an officer.
Gu Hongming

Gu Hongming: A man marrying a small wife is a teapot with several teacups

Speaking of Gu Hongming, apart from his amazing learning, the most astonishing thing is his set of abusive theories: he advocates that men should marry small wives, which is the basis of social stability. He said that men are teapots, women are teacups, a teapot must be paired with several teacups, and there can never be a teacup with several teapots.
In addition to the original match, Gu Hongming also married 2 women in his life. One is a Japanese woman, Sadako Yoshida, who has deep feelings for Sadako Yoshida, and even claims that "if he doesn't see Sadako Yoshida for a day, he will lose sleep", so he calls Sadako his "sleeping pill"; the other is a young and beautiful concubine Biyunxia in his later years.
Gu Hongming's wife is called Shugu, there is a pair of three-inch golden lotuses that he is most fascinated by, whenever he writes articles with blocked ideas, he lets Shugu sit next to him, and lets him play with the small feet that have been stripped of their footcloths, as long as he smells the smell of the small feet, Gu Hongming is suddenly refreshed, his thinking is smooth, and his thoughts are gushing, and his pen is sprinkled.
When Gu Hongming was a professor at Peking University, he went to a student's house to collect books at one time, and a servant opened the door for Gu Hongming, and as soon as Gu Hongming entered the door, he smelled a strong smell of feet, and his soul was suddenly overwhelmed. A few days later, Gu Hongming wrote a letter to the student, proposing to exchange his treasured "Zhang Xuan's Epitaph" for his family's servant.
The student was shocked, shocked by the teacher's heavy taste, this girl had a thin face and a wide nose, he did not expect that the teacher was willing to exchange such a precious treasure for this girl, of course, he was willing to complete a good thing.
Therefore, the student solemnly bathed and dressed up the next morning and sent the girl to the teacher's house. Unexpectedly, in the afternoon, this girl was retreated, and it turned out that Gu Hongming couldn't wait to catch her little foot, but found that he couldn't smell any stink.
Gu Hongming was not satisfied with this, and often had to go to the kiln, and he was generous every time, and the old bustards saw him like they had seen the god of wealth, and every time they smiled and welcomed his arrival. At first, Yuan Shikai sent 300 pieces of ocean to Gu Hongming in order to win him over, and Gu Hongming immediately carried this huge amount of money straight to the eight hutongs in the capital until the money was spent.

Huang Shaolan later became Zhang Taiyan's only female disciple and huang Kan's sister.
