AVIC Zhang Xinguo talks about complex systems and digital twins

On July 9, 2018, Zhang Xinguo, Deputy General Manager and CIO of AVIC, delivered a keynote speech on "Co-Evolution of Aeronautical Complex System & Complex System Engineering" at the INCOSE Annual Meeting, which was his last public speech as a current leader of AVIC.

In his speech, Zhang Xinguo analyzed the great challenges faced by traditional systems engineering in the digital age from the development characteristics of complex aviation products, and proposed the path and direction of the evolution of complex system engineering methods.

First of all, the mode of thinking should be jumped from a mechanical deterministic to an organic evolutionary theory, from a focus on the local and professional fields to a systematic way of thinking that pays attention to the relationship between the whole and the environment.

Secondly, systems engineering applications will change from a document-based paradigm to a new model-based paradigm, realize continuous reasoning mapping from requirements (R), function (F), logic (L) to physical (P) models, conduct multiphysics/multidisciplinary joint simulation verification based on digital space as soon as possible, and carry out agile iteration and feedback, with a view to comprehensively transmitting and penetrating to digital manufacturing and intelligent manufacturing.

Combining the practical experience of China's aviation industry, Zhang Xinguo proposed to establish a complete knowledge platform, methodology, toolchain genealogy and integration method to support model-based systems engineering life cycle enablement.

At the 2019 National Enterprise Management Innovation Conference, Zhang Xinguo, as the former deputy general manager of AVIC, gave a speech on "AVIC Management Innovation Practice from Three Perspectives", sharing the innovation process of AVIC's business, process and IT perspectives.

Through the complex system methodology, Zhang Xinguo elaborated on the efforts and practices of AVIC for more than four years, but as a professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering of Tsinghua University, he naturally cannot be limited to a highly complex enterprise field, and he hopes to find a system engineering method acceptable to general manufacturing enterprises.

Zhang Xinguo proposed, "In the future, digital clues (author: digital threads) and digital twins will play an important role in Industry 4.0." ”

From concept development, production, use and maintenance, how to move from virtual space to real space, how to use digital models to run through the whole process and life cycle, connect from concepts to physical models through digital threads, and promote engineering-based models in engineering.

In the face of the future development of the aviation industry, Zhang Xinguo pointed out with enthusiasm, "We must design and develop aircraft in both the virtual world and the physical world, and design simulation organizational models and process models in the computer field to guide the operation of real organizations." ”

Finally, it is revealed that in the nomination of academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2021, Zhang Xinguo, who is currently a professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering of Tsinghua University, has been nominated, and perhaps at the end of the year, we should call him Academician Zhang Xinguo.
