Yang Huishan: There is no struggle in life, how does it come from enlightenment

Founded in 1987 in Taiwan by Yang Huishan and Zhang Yi, Liuli Workshop has grown from a small workshop to a world-renowned cultural enterprise in the field of art. Many of his glass artworks are collected by more than 20 world-class museums, including the Palace Museum in Beijing, the National Art Museum of China, and the Victoria Museum in the United Kingdom.

"Why did you choose Glass?" Since 1987, Yang Huishan and Zhang Yi have been asked this question countless times.

It is no wonder that a Golden Horse Award for Best Director and a Best Actress suddenly put down the film career that is at its peak, walked into the completely unknown glass world, and directly fell to the origin and started from scratch. This is obviously not a fate bet with a few chances of winning - when they started, they lost all their savings and did not close their hands; they bet on their father and brother's house and did not close their hands; and when they were most embarrassed, they were in debt of NT$75 million.

The driving force behind it still stems from the persistence of Chinese culture. During a visit in Japan, a veteran Japanese glass artist once told them that the glass powder dewaxing casting technique was not the first in France, and the glass ear cup excavated from the tomb of Liu Sheng, king of Zhongshan Jing in Mancheng County, Hebei Province, was actually the world's earliest dewaxing casting method.

At the time, they said, they only felt that "a slap in the face is a cultural shock." "We are deeply disturbed by the neglect of tradition in society as a whole, and only by valuing tradition can we have dignity and a future." After that, the two tried their best to collect the lost ancient glass, and promoted the fusion of Chinese glass and the world's modern glass art, "burning money like burning paper".

Each glass work requires 12 processes, 6-8 months of fine work, fire, water, each link is quite difficult to grasp, and the grasp of the fire is half by skill and half by luck. Such a material also makes it impossible for two identical glass products in the world.

Such an "impermanent" state is very similar to the life of each of us, and also allows Yang Huishan and Zhang Yi to emerge from the middle of life and burst out of greater inspiration.

In order to drive out the most perfect work at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, Yang Huishan was so tired that she lost her hearing in her left ear. In 1998, Zhang Yi was hospitalized for two-degree myocardial infarction due to exertion. Destruction, rebirth, disorder, like the state of glass itself, also reveal the essence of life.

It is this destruction again and again, the couple began to integrate the perception of life into the creation in the dialogue with Liu Li, freely reshaped at will, used the normal life of life to explore the meaning of life, casually and naturally told the happiness of life, expressed the diversity of life, and carried out a dialogue between life and nature, life and Zen, life and emotion...
